I was wandering around my local bookstore this afternoon, thinking about my great experience with a lovely provider in New York, when I stumbled upon the third book by Belle du Jour, who is (was?) apparently a London-based provider. She has written "The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl" and "The Further Adventures of a London Call Girl", and the current book I'm reading, "Playing the Game".
The content is generally hilarious, but parts of the book are sobering, as the principal character deals with juggling The Boyfriend (who knows of her 'job') and a desire for a civilian job.
From my limited experience reading the massive amount of information on TER (discussion boards and reviews), Belle du Jour appears to actually have been a provider.
So, a question (after the long-winded intro) for Hobbyists and Providers alike: Has anyone read her books, and how real does it seem to you?
There's a hilarious opening scene where she is wearing pearl earrings requested by her client, and he's talking dirty to her while "banging away from behind", and she's making encouraging noises while providing a cynical internal commentary on his 'comments'...
Fascinating information as well, as she describes how she can tell when a guy is close to orgasm, as well as her 'pre-game' routine..
A couple of episodes were just plain stupid and unrealistic but who knows how faithfully the screen writers followed the books. TV and even film media is always more shallow than the book.
But the second season was much better than the first, so I recommend if you're turned off early on, either skip ahead or hang in there.
Haven't read the books (and the TV show did nothing for me), but before the book deal she kept a blog that I used to read. The blog is still up, but she posts less frequently now.
I enjoyed the first book -- parts were very similar to my experiences, and I love her writing style. She's very sharp, witty, and irreverent in a very British way. I haven't read the other two.
I liked the first half of season 1 of the series; the latter half definitely strays from realism. Season 2, as ed2000 mentioned, is killer. It's very well done, and I had to keep a box of tissues handy for the tear-jerker moments. Also, Billie Piper? RAWR.
Now I have to see if I can order the DVDs from anywhere and have it secretly shipped over to the land of Prudishness, where I live ..
Just bought book one - Belle does seem to be a little lost in the beginning.
So, Carrie, which parts were similar to yours? The clientele, trying to think with both heads at the same time? The agency madame? Please spill the beans!
