I am a newbie at this little hobby. I have only seen a few girls for massage and really enjoyed it. I am looking to up the ante a bit. I am married and really concerned about catching an STD. Is this a common issue/problem with respectable providers. Any advice would be appreciated.
1. Play hard, and while you are at it, make sure you get tested often! There is free, anonymous HIV testing. I get tested for everything regularly, and I've never caught ANYTHING. Being tested often is the only way to stop yourself from worrying.
2. Always use a condom to avoid STD transmission. Most clinicians recommend CBJ, not BBBJ, to avoid transmission. Kissing and masturbation is not considered high risk. You can also use saran wrap or dental dams with lube for DATY, and that is safer than uncovered DATY.
I agree with #1 and always always using condoms for intercourse. #2 is harder because w/o uncovered DATY life is not worth living (LOL, but true). My answer has been to maintain excellent hygiene, to expect the same from providers, and to make a visual inspection before diving in. If the visual does not make me happy, I just skip the DATY and almost invariably I do not see that provider again.
I prefer BBBJs but if the provider prefers CBJ I usually just skip the BJ except as a "fluffer." If I really like the provider, no BBBJ is not a deal-breaker. Same w/ no DFK (although I do really like to kiss).
I get tested regularly, including for herpes. I take lots of vitamins and try to stay healthy and clean. So far so good.
I have been in the hobby for 5 years and have been with perhaps 50 providers, including several in Tijuana. Almost never do I see a provider who does only CBJ and I always perform DATY on the lady. (And usually I see ladies with CIM on their menus.)
I am tested approximately once a year; have never had an STD.

Of course, if you come down with an STD, you might conclude there is a God who is punishing you.....to say nothing of your female doing so.
And: there is risk in almost anything. For example, I wonder if Tattooed Asian considered the risks when she decided to have her body painted. Scientists have discovered that some tattoo ink has high metal content. She may have medical problems decades in the future.
I test every 3 months. I have picked up very few STDs over my "career" and all of them were treatable by an antibiotic. And I have not picked up an STD in the US with an escort. I am always covered for P-V but enjoy BBBJ and daty.
