“I subscribe to the Pete Seeger theory that all music is political.” - Steve Earle
Johnny Cash understood the power of symbolism very well. I find it interesting that whenever I think of Johnny Cash, the first thing that comes to mind is his wearing black for the downtrodden.
Well, there's things that never will be right I know, And things need changin' everywhere you go, But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right, You'll never see me wear a suit of white.
Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day, And tell the world that everything's OK, But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back, 'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.
Cash was so much more of a man to me than other "stong, silent" types, because he really stood for the troubled.
It's funny, when I was growing up in Illinois, I used to wake up every day to a radio station that played "I Walk The Line" exactly when my radio was set for when I went to elementary school. JC's voice was, for a long while, more present in my life than my own father's.
That video he did for "Hurt" is all the more poignant now.
a true American legend and one mean tough straight-shooting mofo ... he was "bad" before bad was even invented (and then picked up by today's crop of cream-puff wannabe juniors)
it's so bizarrely fitting that his last music video should be a cover of Nine Inch Nails!
