Smart.

It's important for everyone to know their limits.  You're fortunate enough to not only know those limits, but what can happen when those limits are crossed, and the damage/hurt (and financial loss) that can result from it.

Sure, I can say "you might be missing out on a wonderful 'relationship'", but I don't know that.  Stepping back and reigning in those emotions is never a bad thing.  There isn't a potential downside to that, so it's the smarter thing to do, if you can do it.  Plus, this is P4P, so keeping it simple is good.

Since no one can really know all the details of your situation, only you can decide if it was smart or not.  Judging by your post, it seems it was the best option.
