I was very fortunate, based on previous experiences to be able to “read the tea leaves” to know almost exactly when I needed to “get out” and retire from my manufacturing career with maximum benefit and knowing I had a secure retirement. But more importantly, I wanted to avoid the impending rapid decline in business with all the associated ugliness of layoffs, cost reductions, travel restrictions, etc…. And fortunately I did so.
So how does a provider decide it’s time to retire? Is it simply a matter of no one calls for an appointment anymore so you have no choice? Pretty tough situation..

the Naked City but I will see if I can find it, seems intriguing. From a provider POV, I would say retirement is triggered by transitions. A relationship, a new role, or a new interest. Most of us are incredibly happy so if we find something that makes us happier I think that's when we retire. I feel having an objective or goal is helpful for some, but even that can be bittersweet feeling.
I’ve never seen The Naked City, so I’m re-directing back to my original question .. when do you decide it’s “time”?
A provider I know very well was forced to retire when her business completely disappeared over a short time period of 2-3 months. She went from a couple appointments a day to maybe 1 or 2 appointments per week.
She had a knee injury (from her sports hobby) that required surgery and put her out of action for about 6 weeks. When she recovered, she just had no business. Maybe it was age (she was in her early 50s but didn’t look like it) or price ( she was at the highest price in her market). It hit her hard .. she couldn’t (or didn’t want to) understand why no one was contacting her.
It’s difficult to accept that you’re “over the hill”.
I sometimes chat with my hostesses. I don't pry (too much) but some like to share (i.e., talk, probably to avoid the non-talking parts, and I'm a good listener). One hostess told me how she was learning cosmetology (at a local training academy) and she was saving her money to start her own business (beauty parlor? spa?) within a couple of years. . Going back several years, there were threads on General Discussion about the curriculum at JDU (Jack Dunphy University) where our Providers could take courses on financial planning (e.g., SAVE some of your earnings and don't blow it all on blow), business fundamentals, intro to escort law, and so on. I forget if there was a specific course or courses on Planning for Retirement. . Search the General Discussion Board for "JDU".
