What approximately $9 million looks like when it goes up in flames, I can tell you, it makes a BIG column of flame.
A few hours ago a rather nasty thunderstorm rolled over us here bringing intense lightning. A fuel tank holding 58K barrels of unleaded gasoline was struck by lightning. The resulting explosion was so intense it shook my apartment building about 3 miles away.
Authorities are saying the fire probably won't burn itself out until sometime tomorrow, so right now I am watching approximately 2.4 million gallons of gas, at local prices of about $3.85/gal go up in flames.
I guess gas prices will be going up in these parts.
The good news though, is that no one was near the tanks when the lightning struck, so no one was hurt. That is the silver lining in all of it.
Back in '94, a natural gas pipline exploded in central NJ...I was working late night less than a mile away...the explosion killed seventeen people in a garden appt. complex, and injured many more...from my vantage point (?!?), a flash of light, then what felt like a truck colliding with my building. When I went outside with a co-worker, a pillar of fire reached into the sky...like something out of a Cecil B. DeMille epic.. LE blocked off the entrance/exits to the GSP for more than three hours, ubtil the gas co. turned off the valves that fed the fire....
Years later, when a gas company proposed building a similar pipeline near two local schools, I attended the meeting, and told a local commissioner what I had seen. I was invited onto the stage, and told them what had happened years earlier. Our local Congressman, already against the prososal, thanked me in person for stating my position, and used his position to scuttle the project. Even though I am a Libertarian, and usually oppose the Dem party, in this case, they were right! I have voted for this Congressman in every election since is then...
Just my three pennies. Local gas prices will not go up as a result of this. Of more importance...peak oil global production has been reached...not a good thing...
Yup, everything is fine. There were apparently some truckers about 100 yards away refueling a nearby tank when the explsion happened. None of them were injured though. The tanks are nowhere near any other structures, so only the one fuel tank was affected. The firemen have been working through the night to make sure none of the other fuel tanks ignite.
It is still burning this morning, but it looks like we were exceptionally lucky. We lost a ton of gasoline, but no one was hurt and no other structures were damaged. But wow, even this morning, the flames are spectacularly huge and the smoke coming from it just blots out most of the sky.
