The NIH gets it .. this is a long thoughtful review of FSSW full service sex workers .. it covers from the girl in the alley to the $1K girl with a website .. you can see they understand the truth and blow up myths ... maybe just maybe we will see legalization or at least regulation in our lifetime ... ok maybe your lifetime
One would hope that an NIH/VA paper wouldn't have at least two grammatical blunders -- just in the Abstract. I have not read the whole thing but the beginning is ... odd.
I wonder if it is a spoof? Is there anyone in this forum in a position to find out?
Have not read though the whole paper (probably won't either) but it doesn't read like a spoof. Seems like it is a real paper and does take the subject seriously.
It is part of the Author's Manuscripts section of the publications and there are other papers if you navigate up a level or two. So seems legit.
This paper is silly....where are they getting these statistics and data? If anyone is TRULY interested in reading about sex workers rights, challenges many in the industry face, and interviews from those actually in the industry, here are some more reliable sources for information:
SWOP USA Desiree Alliance Woodhall Foundation Scarlett Alliance Red Umbrella Fund SWARM I URGE you to donate to any of these wonderful organizations that work tirelessly to advocate for sex workers rights
You would think that people who had been seeing sex workers for decades would trust their own eyes and experiences over what some so called expert, who is often just some college kid with ZERO real life experience writing a paper for class, which will be graded by a teacher with even less life experience in the subject.
I think if someone wants an "expert" opinion, we have more than enough right here on TER. We have providers who have been doing this for twenty years or even longer, or guys like myself who been at it for over 45 years now. It has been my experience that virtually everything I have read in the MSM about sex work is riddled with errors and is almost always written with an agenda that does not benefit sex workers or their clients. I am only familiar with about half the organizations you list, but everyone of them that I do recognize is a thousand times better a resource than the one quoted in the OP.
The OL was not MSM. But it is in print. Rubbish, or not? Ignore the New Yorker injection for a moment -- what's your call on the NIH/VA preprint? . *OL = Original Link
Read about half and skimmed the rest and it seems pretty reasonable.
For instance, looking at the motivation claims that FSSW were either subjected to some forms of child or adolescence trauma or pushed into due to economic pressures they note: "Yet, most research on FSSW has used data gathered from small samples and assumed, but has not demonstrated, that their needs and motives are different from people employed elsewhere." They also call out the problem of linking FSSW with real trafficking and how doing creates a number of problems.
Most people writing such papers have at least learned the proper use of a comma. It's also a VERY difficult read and I started getting a headache well before I got even halfway through it. I am hardly a professional writer, but I write better even when PUI. lol
As for its substance, it was riddled with inaccuracies, and based on a lot of false assumptions that tended to confirm my initial suspicions that it was written by someone/s with no personal experience in sex work. I did get through most of it, but it wasn't without some effort, ok a LOT of effort, and I should have followed my first instinct and simply stopped reading after the first paragraph or two. Now would you like to know how I REALLY felt about it??? lol
