They are going to fire Joe Torre, and replace him with who??? This really sucks!!! The NY Yankees spent all that money on players last season, and still fell just short of going to the World Series. It will be 3 times in 5 years that they have failed to do so.
To me, Torre is the Yankees, and firing him will be the bambino of all mistakes!!!

And how many rings does Lou have? 1 with Cincinnati many years ago. Torre has kept the high payroll pin stripe guys playing together for all these years. If anyone should go, how about the hitting coach, Mattingly?

the simple fact is that the Yankees are repeating the same mistakes they made in the 80s. They're squandering millions on prima donna and over the hill ballplayers who have no idea what the Yankee pinstripes mean or how to play as a team. As far as I'm concerned they should fire everyone outside of Matsui and Jeter and a couple of others and start over. I would settle for dumping A-Rod and Johnson. How many good young pitchers could they get for those two salaries? However, in American professional sports, it's always easier to fire the coach. Joe Torre may not be the greatest manager but he got them a lot farther than I thought he would given the shitty picthing they've had all year. And for those of us who believe in Karma, I think getting rid of Pettit and bringing in the overhyped A-Rod may turn out to be the curse that it takes the Yankees another decade to get over. And for all you Yankee haters, we fans will just have to take solace in the 25 World Series rings the Yankees have. Or is it 26? So hard to keep count.
Pitching is the name of the game in the post-season and the Yankees pitching was mediocre at best. The recent Yankee way of outslugging the opposition 9-8 doesn't work when you get held to 3 or less runs.
They still get to the post season every year ! ! !

I think he's lost his fire in the belly the last few years and as much as I like him, his time has probably come to move on.
The Yanks needs a Bill Parcells kind of coach - someone who doesn't care if the players like him, but he gets 110% out of players. Big Stein bought himself a lot of talent on that field, if they get a coach that can crack a whip and be a hard ass, the Yanks could have been untouchable.
If they got a hardass kind of coach like Parcells, then the chokers like A-Rod, Giambi, & Sheffield (all overhyped, overpriced pussies who are NOT winners and who choke under the Yankees' mystique & PRESSURE) WOULD CHOKE ALL THE MORE and most likely wouldn't have even made the postseason. What Big Stein needs to realize is you don't win championships bringing in "hired guns" like the aforementioned chokers that I've named. Ask yourself how many rings those 4 have collectively. That's right, zero. When the Yankees were winning their 4 titles in 5 years, they did it as a team. Unfortunately, a lot of those "team" players like Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez, Chuck Knoblauch, & Scott Brosius have retired. Others who were unsung stars (I could name a lot of plattoon outfielders and pinch hitters) were traded away to free up spots for the chokers, er I mean "Stars". Then there's pitching. They should've done everything in their power to retain Andy Pettite. Letting him go as a free agent and letting pratically all of their young pitchers go while they brought in old, tired arms like Randy Johnson was crippling to the team. The shame of it all was that with Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettite & Mariano Rivera you had a great nucleus to "build" around. "Build" being the key word. Whose idea was it to unload up-&-coming "team players" & load up on high-profile, overpriced-chokers? Torre's? NO! It was Big Stein's! In many ways, this was Torre's FINEST season. With the injuries the Yankees endured all season, Torre was able to maintain an even, steady hand at directing them to their division title. That they distanced themselves from the pack at the end of the regular season only built up the pressure even more. But unlike the season, which is a marathon, a postseason series is a sprint. A little stumble or trip (slump) is all it takes to derail & eliminate the team. Honestly, Big Stein has probably COST the Yanks a couple of titles during his run as owner. To fire Torre would be a collosal fuck up.

I agree 100% that a roster full of team players is the way to win championships, and that a roster full of over priced primadonna's is not.
But that's not really the question at hand. The Yanks did in fact have a roster full of primadonna's, what they were missing was the right manager to handle THAT type of team. They need a hard ass mgr to kick em in the ass, knock them off their high horse & drive them to perform at 110%. The days of those players pushing themselves to new heights went out the window once they earned primadonna status and they became far more concerned with their own image than they did about winning. Parcells was great at this when he coached the Patriots in New England. He put the fear of god into the primadonna's on that team (Bledsoe, Terry Glen, et al) and they performed like nobody's business. He was in the face of the primadonna's on that team like a drill sargent and would knock them off their high horse in two seconds flat. They hated Parcells to death at the time, but Parcells didn't give a crap and he motivated them to perform at their absolute maximum level.
If you have a roster full of team players like Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez, Chuck Knoblauch, & Scott Brosius, then Torre is my guy hands down. He can manage a roster of guys like that better than anyone. But it takes a special breed of guy to light the fire in the belly of primadonna, let alone an entire team of them.
Unless Big Stein plans to change his $200 Million + approach to winning a World Series, Torre isn't the best Mgr for this roster.
...lots of them. First, you're forgetting that this is BASEBALL! Over a 162 game regular season, nobody, ESPECIALLY PRIMADONNAS, will respond favorably to hard-ass, in-your-face-treatment from their manager. What works for Parcells in football and Bobby Knight in college basketball won't work in MLB. Not exactly an "apples to apples comparison", but still a lot better than what you come up with, is this: how many top-notch college basketball coaches have found real success in the NBA? None come to mind. Because the NBA is more of a marathon. Gee, what else is a "marathon"?
Also, your theory has holes in it in this capacity: The primadonnas on the Yankees already have a hard-ass manager. His name is Steinbrenner. They don't call him "the Boss" for nothing. Granted, he's not in the dugout with them, or with them everyday the way Torre is. But his demands & pressure are most assuredly felt by the players. It's this "pressure" that causes the "choke". The last thing they need is Torre's hands wrapped on top of Big Stein's around their necks. Having said all that, make no mistake about this: Torre is not some pussywimp who doesn't know how to "get tough" when the situation calls for it.
The Yankees' failure to advance in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006 had a lot more to do with Big Stein's hands than with anything Torre did or didn't do. And just as important, their titles were won with Stein's help in... GETTING OUT OF THE WAY! The moves that TORRE made in '96, '98, '99 & 2000 were a BIG part of their success.
