Yesterday I was slammed for a photo post that I posted in the Monday wet and wild trend on the Florida Board.  I was described as disgusting among other things.  I noticed today that the negative remarks were removed, along with my articulate assertive responses and observations, leaving only my photo along with two positive comments.  I am not writing this to rehash all that was discussed yesterday or to attack anyone.  

I have no idea what the original issue was--I don't look at the Florida boards at all.

Being something of a libertarian though, I was interested to look at the article you linked.  I agree that shaming people for their personal habits is not A Good Thing.

However:  What about another kind of shame?  One not of arbitrary sanctions imposed on people exercising their Natural Rights, but rather something like this:

Being a man of a certain age, I can remember a time when newspapers often (especially around the holidays) would publish pictures and other information about deadbeat dads and wife-beating husbands.  It was done for the obvious reason--to shame such men into stepping up and treating the women and children correctly, and not shirking their responsibilities.  I can't find too much wrong with that kind of shame; especially the deadbeat dad part (presumably, a wife, being an adult, has options that she can exercise, like leaving the marital residence, seeking orders of protection and starting divorce proceedings, etc, while children do not have full rights until attaining a certain age).

A form of coercion, is this not?  Yet how many would argue against this type of coercion.  If you lived in a small community (not a city where one can be nearly anonymous), that picture in the newspaper might very likely "inspire" a few neighbors to pay our deadbeat dad a visit.  Deadbeat dad might even be so "persuaded" to do the right thing that he might send a few bucks home to his estranged wife to be put towards the needs of the children.

Somehow, I can't see much wrong with that kind of coercion.

As far as whatever happened on the Florida boards:  No way anybody on here should be throwing stones.

My opinions will remain my opinions, not public forum.  People should not judge others by their own standards and one would expect people who indulge in the hobby and providing would understand this.
