MUDA, Nepal — With its simple mud homes, low roofs and string cots, this tiny settlement near the Indian border looks like any other in this part of western Nepal. Only the women suggest something different, garishly painted as they are even in the early morning hours.

They loiter on a slope or around the tea stall, waiting for men, who come, banter, negotiate, then slyly walk one of the women to one of the village houses. The women's children play nearby and watch.

Caste has become destiny for many communities, defining their profession through generations. But few people have inherited so vexed a destiny as the Badis of Nepal. Their profession is prostitution, passed down from one generation to the next.

to quote John Lennon, woman is still "the nigger of the world".  While many men on here may not agree with this, and think that the women in this country and in this profession wield unlimited power over us, even that is debatable (as is shown by the thread below about stress).  However, in second and third world countries, it DEFINITELY is still the case.

but I think you may have missed the whole point of the original post. I think Mr.SD's post was that although we think we "have come a long way, baby", we are not really that far behind Nepal as far as how women are treated here. And once again, I agree with Mr. "PC".

Well let's see here.....we have a situation here where we pay $$ to women to have sex with us, some women who probably wouldn't do so without that added incentive. You call that an equal relaitonship? I don't think so, Sir!

I disagree with you but rather than jump into the flame war I prefer to have a rational discussion of our differences.  And I'm not accusing you of starting the flames.

The fact is that in this country we're somewhere between Saudi Arabia or Nepal (which wasn't Muslim last time I looked) and where we ought to be.

For every man who lost part of his wealth in a divorce there is at least one woman who worked 10 years putting hubby through Med School, or Law School, or some such thing, only to be dumped for a younger (and now, 10 years later, prettier) woman as soon as he got established in his new career.  Usually she's left with barely enough to get by.

No room for a long treatise here, but while we may "have come a long way baby" there's still a long way to go.
