Nazi

Last night I watched a documentary on Nazi "prostitutes". The word is a misnomer, as the women were not paid. They were abducted and sent to brothels in their cities, or sent off to various fronts in other countries.

The Germans started this after the invasion of Paris, when one out of six soldiers was getting an STD from French prostitutes,  putting the soldiers out of commission for weeks or even months.  

Large office buildings or apartment buildings were commandeered by the Germans in the occupied areas for the brothels. The brothels were under heavy guard, to keep out non-soldiers, and to keep the women from escaping.  

The women were inspected by officers to make sure that they were clean, attractive, and had the right appeal for German soldiers. The procedures involved were of typical Nazi efficiency. At first it was women from the occupied countries who were abducted, but as fewer and fewer women were available, the Nazis resorted to finding attractive Jewish women at the concentration camps, and feeding them to make them look good after having been starved. German law strictly forbade Germans having sexual relations with Jews, so the law had to be modified for the prostitutes. It was reasoned that the Jewish women were not human, and so could be regarded as mere property.  

The Germans had full-time doctors to inspect the women for disease. They were apparently fed well, but they were required to service anywhere from 20 to 45 men per day. Most couldn't physically keep up with this for more than a year, and were executed. Some escaped. A very few were released.

I was struck by photos of the women mingling with the soldiers. They appeared to be having a good time, which I assume was an act. I was also struck by the fact that the Polish resistance in particular regarded the women as traitors, and physically punished them. After the war, there was still resentment towards the women, so few spoke about it. One would think there would have been particular sympathy for them. (My ex-wife's great aunt had been one of these women in Poland, but it was never discussed by the family).

Why are you so surprised? We continue with these atrocities and do not seem to learn, as a species...

And if we're going to be perfectly honest here the US government and military and the ROK government in the post Korean War period, and their behavior in occupied Germany and Japan.

People have be pretty fucked up but if everyone always thinks it's only "those people" things don't really get much better.

What I found interesting, but not surprising, was the way the Nazi's organized and systemized it. They even kept records of the women, including photographs.

When someone came up with the term "War is Hell", they

knew what the fuck they were talking about.  If you think you are the next guy to be laying face down in a rice paddy with a bullet in your head,  your fucking attitude changes and not for the better.  When you are in that puddle and your radio operators brains are scattered all around you,  you become an animal.

Want another interesting fact. Females who gave birth in Germany

during that time are STILL getting checks from the Germany regardless of where in the world you live. There are very few because they are in their 90's but they still get the checks.

My Grandfather

My Grandfather was part of the Dutch Resistance, after the Nazi's rolled through Belgium and Holland he was imprisoned in a POW camp and spent the remainder of the war there. He told me some horrific stories of the things he saw Nazi's doing to Jews at the neighboring concentration interment camp which would make the things you describe as humane. These beings, I won't call them people or humans, they were the very worst of the worst, absolutely despicable.

we humans as a species

We are one of two species that kills indiscriminately, the other is Apes. And yet we always talk of how wonderfully intelligent we are.

There are certainly periods in history which makes me ashamed to be part of this species, but I'm stuck with it.

They were very consistent on that at least.

If you're interested in a broader perspective on the NAZI and WWII activities you might find the German documentary The Unknown Soldier (Der Unbekannte Soldat). What was interesting about this was the insight that many of the atocities that were "ordered" by the leadership really weren't. They documented one of the situations where some commanders murdered the captured prisoners of war while others didn't (all on the same front) and noted that those commanders that honored the Geneva Conventions were never repremanded or even had their actions limit their advancement. Of coarse, those who, as one commenter here put it, became animals were never punished or sanctioned either. In one sense that makes the horror of that regime all the greater -- they didn't have to force anything, they merely set the opportunity in place for the worst in human nature to do it's thing.

But again, as pointed out, war is hell and we're not in too large of a position (thought I agree the average soldier in the USA military will be more moral than in a lot of other militaries) and if you want to watch something that's a very depression portrait of the USA looks for the movie, A Little Pond. It's Korean and about that that war).

The one thing I do find hopeful about both is that in both the documentaries many, perhaps most soldiers seem to have chosen not to become animals but instead to remain men -- haunted by the memories of the hell they lived through but still men at least.

That might be a bit of an over statement. Larger dolphins species have been known to terrorize smaller species of dolphin to the point of killing them. Orca have been filmed playing with seals, tossing them in the air and catching them -- clearly not necessary for the purpose of eating. And, closer to home, cats have been known to hunt not for food but for play.

I suspect it's more about abundance of food than anything else.

Dogs also kill for play. Russ was definitely over simplifying.

Implying that in South Korea the US government and military, and ROK government, behaved like the Nazis occupying conquered lands (to include forcing women into servicing their soldiers) is factually and historically unfounded. There is no comparison whatsoever.

That is very weird

I watch documentaries etc on youtube. Saturday night I feel asleep watching about the Waffen SS and woke up in the middle of the night to likely that exact same video. It was about the same topic and was titled the such. What I did watch of it seemed educational and sad. I already knew about that but it hits a little harder when you see a documentary of it.

I like that youtube will keep going down a list of related things, so if I fall asleep to one thing, I may very well wake up to something I hadn't thought of watching.

Those smiling faces likely were a way to survive and try to be in a "better" place than what they would get at the concentration camp. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to survive.

There is nothing good about what the Nazi's did. I have read up on just about everything because my Grandparents grew up in Germany during that time period and also there can be a lot of knowledge learned about anything (good or horrid).

It's estimated that there were 14,000 rapes committed by US troops in WWII. 904 soldiers were tried and convicted.  

I think any of the armies mentioned in previous posts did more than 14,000, and convicted none.

I've been studying the Nazi's since I was a young teen some fifty years ago, knew they raped women, but this was the first I'd learned about the brothels.

I didn't want to depress people with this, but I thought that the 20 to 45 guys a day might elicit a reaction. I would think that would be torture.
