New disturbing film that's out..

There's a new film out called "The Magdalene Sisters" based on a true story about a convent in Ireland that was open for 30+ years until closing in 1996.....Fathers could condemn their daughters to this place if they flirted, had baby out of wedlock, were raped, etc...The physical & mental abuses at this place were profound...

I haven't seen it, but it apparently is a powerful, & disturbing film.....Anyone seen it?

I went to a Catholic grade school but I guess I shouldn't complain after reading about this place..

One of my all time favorite albums, and one of the best songs on the record.  Two days after she won her best album Grammy for Turbulent Indigo, an article came out which called her a "has been," in so many words.  Always good when journalists have good timing.

Single, you continue to impress me.  Do you have "Woman of Heart and Mind", the career retrospective DVD on Joni?  And Light, have you read "Dynasty", a book on the Nehru/Gandhi families rule of India?  Both are quite informative.

I can't wait until this movie comes to San Diego. I read a review in the SF Chronicle, and it sounds excellent!

I have heard of the convent - NPR did a piece about it a couple of years ago, interviewing people who had been there, and so on.

So, is the film disturbing "good" or disturbing "wait for video"?

O.

If the movie's half as good as the song it should be something.  Is it showing in theaters or is it a PBS or cable thing?

Now I just have to track down the melody and I can add this to my repertoire.  BTW, the link in the lyrics themselves (see singlton's post) point to a very concise but poignent history.  Definitely a worthwhile read.

Now for a convoluted train of thought leading to yet more song lyrics which might provide some with a welcome antidote to the down mood.  I was thinking that although the song is first person in a woman's voice, I'd just perform it anyway.  What the hell, I'm a disciple of Pete Seeger, who could always do that, even with one of his sister Peggy's songs.  She's a terrific singer and songwriter in her own right.

Hey, why not post a link to these lyrics?

It's one of those movies that's only playing in NY & LA right now....Not sure if rest of country will get it, but it will likely be on video in few months....

as a movie trivia question.

I live in SD, so who knows, I may find occasion to be in LA.

This is also close to the story line in Puccini's opera  Suor Angelica (he also wrote  La Bohème). She was "committed" to a convent for having a baby.
