Why does society have to juxtapose sex and religion?

There was an awful lot of begating going on in there as I recall.

click link you sinners.

Mr Fisher -------not the start of Revelations, but a growing & welcome trend toward the secularization of modern society------Atheism is finding a more receptive audience these days as evidenced by the huge sales of such books as "God is not Great" by Christopher Hitchens &
"The Davinci Code". Crazed religious fundamentalism fueled 9/11 & people are getting fed up with it. As an Atheist, I welcome the trend of getting rid of the Hotel Gideon's---would rather see a copy of Penthouse in my hotel nightstand.

Btw, one last thing---- in your post I think you meant "in there"------sorry, I couldnt resist---
I think I'll leave now & make my way down route 666-------;)

I have to admit, I'm not very trendy, but this is a trend I can get behind.

I don't really have anything against religion itself, whatever stories that get little children to go to sleep are ok with me, but I am sick and tired of having fairy tales shoved down my throat.

I don't agree with you however about the Penthouse magazines, I much prefer Playboy. (chuckle)

This is probably something for the politics and religion board.  Having already outed myself as a Massachusetts liberal, I might as well go ahead and agree with you about the contributions of Mr. Hitchens.  Not so sure about the DV Code (which I've not read), as this strikes me as more conspiracy theory/mysticism intended to shock/offend believers rather than the true rational skepticism practiced by Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, et al.

I wish society were becoming more secularized, but in America it may not be so.  It is still impossible for a Presidential candidate to be elected without professing strong religious beliefs.  We are still fighting over teaching of evolution in school and fundamentalists have built a $27 million high-tech "Creation Museum" in Kentucky. As far as hotel rooms, last time I checked Marriott still stocks Gideon's Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Personally, I'd rather get my Bible references from the Beatles

"Rocky Raccoon, stepped into his room, only to find Gideon's Bible."

or Leonard Cohen

"Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah"

wait until Islam becomes the major religion of the US. At the rate it is growing, it is just a matter of time!

Why should we have to pick between two evils?

People of other religions are more than happy to practice their beliefs and leave the rest of us alone. Why is it that the christians and the muslims need to bend everyone to their way of thinking?

People can pratice satanism for all I care, as long as they don't try to inflict their beliefs on me.

I not certain I would refer to either as evil. You are certainly enjoying the benefits of one.

I am curious as to how our society will change as the other is "imposed". With regard to this I was more thinking of the affects of Radical Muslimism.

How am I enjoying the benefits of one?

If you are implying that this country is great because of christianity, I might suggest that we are great in spite of it, not because of it.

And if you would like to argue that christianity is not forced down the throat of those of us that don't share your beliefs, I'll offer up one short anecdotal example that happens to be true and affects me directly.

I plan on braising some lamb shanks tomorrow, this means that sometime in the next hour or two I am going to have to interupt my evening of football to go to the store to buy the wine in which to braise my lamb. Why, you might ask do I have to do this tonight, when I don't plan on starting the lamb until tomorrow? It's simple in spite of thefact that we are suppossed to have a separation on church and state, no state sponsored religions etc. Georgia has a state law forbidding the sale of packaged alcohol of any type on Sundays.

Bible thumpers, I would like to thank you very much for interupting my evening so as not to offend your version of morality.

Ok, you're definitely right. I used to be more sensitive in regards to other peoples religious beliefs, unitl I realized that the religious types weren't reciprocating. I really should try to voice those feelings exclusively on the P&R board, but when others bring it up, I do have a hard time keeping my trap shut.

Leonard Cohen? Was he the one who wrote the song that Jeff Buckley sings? I love that song. Very moving...

I've always found the Gideon Bibles useful to put under the hotel room alarm clock so I can see it better from the bed!  The end of an era...

Yes, that song was written by Leonard Cohen and has been recorded by many artists including Jeff Buckley, John Cale (in the movie Shrek) and Rufus Wainright (on the Shrek soundtrack).

Cohen, a poet and singer/songwriter from Montreal, has been making records since the 1960s.  His songs are very literate, poetic, even deep.  If you are interested in hearing more, I can recommend his albums "I'm Your Man" and "The Future".

I would say your are not very well versed in the history of our country or its founders. I am not telling you to embrace their beliefs but to deny why they came and they sacrifices they made because you are inconvenienced is ... well it speaks for itself.

but one last thought. This country was founded by people fleeing religious persecution, who immediately starting persecuting others the moment they had the opportunity, and have not stopped since.

What gives you the right to inflict your morality on me, on a board like TER no less. Talk about a hypocrite's hypocrite.

Sorry everybody, my last thoughts on the subject.

Rather than going to a different Board simply stay on topic. Read everything that has been written and see if anyone has tried to impose their religion or morality on you. You won't find it. In fact, if you can, please quote it so that I can understand where the misunderstanding occurred.

Even if they, the founders, were evil ... you and I are still enjoying the benefits of their sacrifices whether we like them or not. That fact is impossible to deny.

Our difference however in this matter is  that I for one happen to appreciate their sacrifice.

Keep your position! Not interested in P&R Board ... been there done that!

As to aliases, they are a freedom which this Board allows, I enjoy them and intend to continue to use them.

Once again if you would go back and read "our" posts this has never been a discussion about religion or its imposition upon you. I would say, "Let's agree to disagree but I am not sure we have ever been on the same topic long enough to disagree."
