Yes it does still occur. The lady is put on payroll, deductions including, CPP and taxes are taken from the paycheck. She receives medical and pension as outlined by the company. She is on payroll like any other employee, though I have only encountered and heard of a salary pay. A contract is usuaually signed outlineing the expectations (how many days a month and the hours which you are to be available). As well, you are typically not permitted to ask the 'client' for any additional fees. The lady will have a corporate credit card, and is to entertain the gentleman, with that card, in any way he would like (dinner, theatre, etc.)
I can't speak for the US, but it is much more common in Canada than I had ever imagined. The pay is very lucritive (I've never been offered less than a six figure starting range), but I personally don't like the principle of working for somebody else. When a company has that much money to pass off for 'entertainment' I worry that they won't be respecting my personal boundries when it comes to how they expect me to assist their clients. I also don't like not having control over my own hours - for me, family always comes first. And in these situations, the comapny always comes first.
As a side note, all of the places which use this arrangement have several ladies on their payroll. A few remain independat escorts, but most are perfectly content with the fee arangement for putting in a few days a month for the company.
I was watching an old movie last night where a company used "call girls" to entertain important clients from out of town. The women were on the company's payroll and they were free to take other clients as long as the company's clients came first. It got me to wondering if companies still have these arrangements with providers or the times have changed and for whatever reason this does not occur any longer. Or maybe it was just made up for the sake of the movie. Just curious and thought I'd ask.

Don't see how it could be, unless it's maybe a 'family' owned business..ya know?
THey existed...I know this because I have been exposed to it under circumstances that would be too complicated to explain here, but indeed when a businessman would come into town at another corporation's request, hotel, driver and of course 'other entertainment' was set up for him. This may have only occurred at the upper eschelon level, but it did occur. As far as the details of how the 'account' was set up...this was back in the days when things like ENRON were less common but a little money exchange under innocuous headings (extra secretarial help) were unquestioned. Does it occur today...I don't know if it does here in the US but travelling in the Orient, this practise is alive and well.
...I know of a well known company that had a few ladies under contract before being bought out by another well known company..the ladies were chosen based on how well each handled herself in multi hour appointment .. if an offer was made, and she was interested, a thorough background check was then given ...they lead very cushy lifes in exchange for their discretion and were required to keep very low key and worked only a few dates a month.
A very nice arrangement for those few who passed the 'test'.
That makes more sense. I answered the way I did because the author said on PAYROLL. Being an accountant, and having done almost everything short of being a Controller for the company, you don't have people on PAYROLL for this - it would be written off as an expense.
And yes, I know of companies who've done so, just not on payroll.

It is part of the Frat system. Scan the boards and you will see specials to folks who are certain Frats from time to time. Also you have to be way up in corporate management.
Some places it is custom to take the customer to strip bars.
I know of a sales rep who regularly provides what ever it takes to get the big accounts. He has an expense account and corp. credit card with a certain amount of slush funds to buy clients lunch, dinner, drinks and other entertainment.
Some of the ladies he uses have credit card accounts for "hosting" and such and others accept payment via. gifts, services (auto expenses), and goods (purchaced and returned for cash with the cooperation of friends at wine shops who get a small "tip") and good old checks written to them as meeting hosteses or bar service help. It all depends on the city and area he has to provide the entertainment and the size of workshops and conferences he's involved in.
The other night on a sports show, lawrence taylor talk about something quite similar for visiting pro teams.
Yes, LT would get escorts for the opposing team the night before a game to have them stay up all night.
