I understand from the provider side of things you need to protect yourself from dangerous clients. But really, the police? It seems mongers go overboard.

His personal info relating to credit card transactions was released and he resigned. I have been arrested, but not for anything prostitution-related. Drinking under age a loooooong time ago. Also was briefly detained as part of a marijuana bust but released for no evidence. I was a very bad boy.
Four people associated with the Emperor's Club were charged with violating the Mann Act. Spitzer however was not charged solely because Democrats protect their own.
You have to be busted actually committing the act. Now take it to the P&R Board or STFU, Fester.

I know the story of a local provider who was arrested (she used to be on TER.) She believes a stalker/ex reported her activities to the police so they set up a sting. I think when police get complaints the police feel they have to look into it. Otherwise it seems they leave the local pros alone.
They prefer to set up stings and catch a dozen guys at the same time. Or if they think a pimp operation is getting too public. It's never good for them politically if this stuff is too much out in the open.
In Boston, all stings were either local agencies or AMPs or street walkers.
A Boston indy got into a minor traffic accident but left the scene. LE tracked her down and she was charged for the traffic crime. The investigation exposed her Provider activities and that ended her career. She was a sweet girl.

On at least one occasion, an Boston AMP owner had a traffic accident in Chinatown, as I recall. She dragged someone under her car through the streets and, I think, even onto the highway! She was pulled over and investigated and that exposed her other activities which were shut down.
But I can say that around 20 years or so ago I visited a few massage parlors and back then and I was always "uptight" that some cops would raid the joint. So I decided it wasn't worth it and haven't been to a MP since then.
But I was arrested when I was 16 for driving without a licence in a "supposedly" stolen vehicle.
I was at an AMP right before it got busted in DC. I think it was up near Good Guys strip club on Wisconsin. But memory fails me and that was a long time ago. I just remember some guy banging on the door, wanting to get in. Mamasan says no, all full come back, but he kept trying to get in. He finally left. I finished up and then I saw on the evening news the place was busted. The girl I saw was being taken away in handcuffs, felt really bad for her. Just weird seeing her on the evening news, though.
Aside from being hassled by the police back during the street walker days of 30+ years ago I was also at an incall when it was busted. I was not caught "with my pants down" I was in the front room with the mamasan who was a friend of mine who almost always fed me every time I visited.
This was very much a case of "do as I say, not as I do" because the cops thought I was the pimp not a customer and the usual strategy of STFU would have landed me in jail that night, I ended up having to talk my way out of being arrested, which is something that almost never works, but this was a unique situation. Long story short, the mamasan and the two girls working ended up going to jail. The other guy at the incall at the time who was literally caught with his pants down was released with a warning as was I. The details are too long to go into here, but maybe on a night that I am bored I'll tell the whole story. I am sure you will find it entertaining.

a now retired top TER girl was touring in the mid west .. and her being extremely buxom and blonde hair and walking out of a hotel, she was stopped by a small town cop. grabbed her purse and there was $22K inside it. since she couldn't explain how she had it, it was seized under civil forfeiture laws. even worse, her being super hot and it being a small city, the story of the hot hooker with $22K made the national news with both her real name and hobby name ... and thats how her parents found out!

I know several girls who had the bank accounts frozen and also there safety deposit boxes locked and couldn't open it due to bank freeze!
One girl kept over 60k in it and the bank seized it.

I knew the girls and was outside the hotel during the bust.
But never for the hobby. Never had charges stick even though I was guilty as charged, and deserved some consequences. I was too much work as I knew to STFU.
Now I am friends with a few people who have been busted. Yes some were well respected providers and seasoned hobbyists. I am not naming names as it is their story to tell. Needless to say screening it the best protection. Knowing your rights and invoking them is the second.

There was a provider in Maryland that was busted, but she was working out of her home - and you know, nosey neighbors. So you know what happens. When men are coming in and out of a neighborhood, alone, it eventually will get attention and concern.

I was once arrested for a noise violation while banging a civvie girl. Apparently, we had the radio on too loud and a neighbor complained. There's quite an adventure story that goes with this, but it's better told in person over a few drinks.

Back in the late 70’s , I had $17 to my name, was in the City of Chicago and decided to check out a MP appropriately named The Harem . It was located on Clark Street or LaSalle. Anyways I walked in on a sting and the Cop says, “Come on In,we are having a party”. Needless to say I was a bit nervous, actually scared. Cops start asking me what I was doing there, I should have kept my mouth shut, but I told them the truth, I just wanted to check this out. They tell me I am in a House of Ill repute, and to stop acting like I was naive. So I had to empty my pockets, and when they saw I only had $17, one of the coppers said,”He does not have enough $$$ to pay the entrance fee. The other cop asked one of the “attendants” if they knew me; and they replied they had never seen me before. So the other cop takes down my personal information from my paper drivers license, writes it down on an index card, and told me they would keep that card on file, and if they caught me at another MP, I would be going to jail! I look back on it now with humor, but tbh I was scared at the time.
If only I had known Mr. Fisher back then, before I was elected Governor!!!

This may be slightly off-topic because it might not specifically fall into the hobbyist/provider realm.
I was in the military, my unit was overseas on deployment going to several countries aboard ship. I was out in town with spending time with my "girlfriend", it was definitely a P4P situation because the ship was only in port for a week or so and when the next ship pulled in, she'd have a different boyfriend. It was my second or third time in-country there, so I knew her from before.
That night, she and I were headed to get something to eat or on our way to her place (it's been decades, I can't remember which), and as we were riding in the open-air public transportation, two local cops on foot saw us and had the driver pull over, which he did. The two cops jumped aboard, ordered all of the other passengers off, leaving just the driver, my girl, me, and themselves. My girl got really scared, grabbed my hand and began squeezing it as tight as if she was giving birth. The cops ordered the driver to drive, I have to admit that the driver looked scared also. One cop, the older one, did all the talking, and it wasn't in English, so I was lost. The drive only lasted about five minutes, but it was certainly way off the beaten path. He took us to some dark deserted street with no one else around, then ordered the driver to stop on the side of the road.
Old Cop began jabbering at my girl, she produced her ID, jabbered back at him answering his questions, more jabbering from Old Cop with a lot of pointing back and forth at me and then at her. I kept asking her what was going on, but she told me to wait. Finally, he seemingly ordered her to explain to me in English what was going on.
They were accusing her of being a street-walker because she couldn't produce the anti-STD health card that all bar-girls were required to carry. She didn't work in a bar, so she didn't have the card. She was sort of an independent I had met neither in a bar nor in the street, a target of opportunity. They put 2 and 2 together and said that since she was with a US serviceman at night in an area where lots of streetwalkers plied their trade, she must be a streetwalker too. They were threatening to take her to jail, but of course, if she wanted to avoid that . . .
The drill was to pull greenbacks from me. She was two seconds away from waterworks, begging me to pay them off. I can't remember how much money they wanted, but it probably came to about the equivalent of $10 or $20 US, which was a lot of money to them. Surprisingly, Old Cop then spoke directly to me in extremely broken English, something about taking her to jail unless I was willing to pay "the fine". More hand-squeezing from Girl-San, so I forked over the cash. The two cops immediately jumped off of the vehicle, Old Cop said, "This driver yours, take you where ever you go like," and they disappeared into the darkness.
Girl-San broke down in complete tears and had the driver take us to her place. That night was some of the best thank-you sex I ever had with her.
Is because of the screening and verification the ladies do. And because many of us understand that we don't need to be blatantly obvious in our communications.
But people do get caught in stings all the time, usually from letting their little head convince them that a hot chick offering FS for $100 out of the local budget motel is legit. These busts don't get much publicity unless it's a public figure or leads to a higher profile bust like trafficking or drugs.
A lady I saw regularly for 10 years worked for an agency that suddenly shut down. After a while, it reopened months later under another name. When I saw her next, she told me what happened. She'd just finished a session in a hotel and her client left. Moments later, a knock at the door - she looked out the peephole and there he was, red faced and practically in tears. She opened up and an army of cops swarmed in. Took them both the station and accused her of prostitution. This was one smart lady; she stuck to her cover story that they were having an affair. He gave her money because she needed to by a new car and her boyfriend was helping her out. She asked for her phone call to speak to her mother, instead calling the agency and said "Mom, I'm at the police station". The agency instantly went dark, cops couldn't get either one of them to admit anything and couldn't prove anything, so they had to let it go. The guy running the agency confirmed the story to me later . I knew him so I don't think it was BS. Apparently, the cops had some reason they were watching comings and goings at this hotel, and they got caught up in it. The agency never used the same hotel twice, so must have been some other activity that made the cops suspicious. In 20 years of the hobby, that's the only one I know of personally.

I knew a girl in Michigan who was touring Chicago and got busted. Only details I recall was once the guy entered the room he asked to go to the bathroom to shower. He was an undercover cop and turned on the shower to make noise while he called the others cops. I assume the tribute was discussed and they had the proof they needed. She got a knock and they arrested her. She said they marched her out through the back of the hotel through the kitchen and she was crying/embarrassed. Said sitting in jail dressed how she was around other women and men was scary. She gave up touring the Windy City. She used the name Dominique in Michigan. Beautiful woman
Another Michigander who got busted was and I am forgetting her name, red hair, sexy MILF. She was all over on these ad boards and she got caught. She had someone scrub her stuff from the net. Adrianna Barstow I think was the name she used. I am sure on the last but the first I am guessing.
