My eleven-year old has a sex-ed movie coming up and of course yours truly was given the crack assignment of explaining the course matter prior to viewing the actual film. So I started out by talking about how animals procreate, then moved on to dicks and pussies, and how he might experience a wet dream or two when fantasizing about Pam Anderson...OK, so I asked him, "How do you feel about it?" His answer: "Dad, I was just thinking about the video game I wanted to rent."

I'd give the mechanics just a high fly-over this time, and concentrate more on the associated emotional, pregnancy and safe sex issues.

I'm a fine one to talk.  Most of what I know about sex my kids told me...

Tell him his body is going to go through some changes that are really cool.  Be relaxed about the whole thing.  Make sure he understands that this isn't really "the talk", it's more like "the ongoing discussion" (not using those exact words, of course), so that he knows he can come to you any time to talk more about it.  Keep it very casual and relaxed, just a couple of guys talking.  

When he has questions, it's often best to talk while you and he doing something physical together, so you can intersperse your comments with small talk about the thing you doing together, and let him soak in what you said.  Sometimes riding together in the car can also be a good place and time.

Stop talking when he wants to stop.  It's cool, he'll know he can bring it up again when he wants.

Show him by example that you know that women aren't strange creatures that can't be understood, but are people who deserve respect and who can be great friends.

Having raised all boys, I agree with JackVance, but I would add a couple of other important things. Masterbation: I told my sons it feels good and they should do it as much as necessary, but it is like Passing Gas and picking your nose, it's private and just not something you do in public. Also, good oral skills can most times, be enough, when your with a partner, since for teens, penetration is not necessary and for the majority of girls, is really over rated. When asked how disappointed they were with their first sexual encounter...Only 10% of men recalled a negative experience. 93% of women did. As the 2 minute wonders, teen boys are, they are a real let down to girls, who most times have waited for the "Right One". Even Mutual Masterbation, can be more fulfilling, than actual intercourse. Since guys are visual and girls can learn about the guys body, as well as her own. Preaching abstinance is unrealistic. Preaching the relience(sp) on condoms is impractical, since kids are impulsive and most times broke...and plus..Their "Bullet Proof"( ah yes, Youth)remember..?

I have utmost respect for your writings, always.  However, I have this pet peeves for those advocating masterbation.  Perhaps it is my experience only, but masterbation, even when I was a boy, was never satrisfying at all, and in fact it always left a little pain in me.  Perhaps this was the reason I "played" with all neighbourhood girls, and even had fun with my gorgeous babysitter.  I was only 6 then, but was completely sexually aware.  To this day, I am surprised how that lazy afternoon, she just laid back, and let this little six year old boy do her!  She was probably 16.  I think after that, I had "fun" with every baby sitter I had, and they never complained, or told my parents.
