I was draftable during the war in Vietnam, which I felt was a bad thing to do. (I honor my friends who suffered and particularly those that died there, but I do not honor those who got us and kept us there.)I was in medical school then internship, residency, and fellowship and was never drafted. I don't know what I would have done if drafted as a combatant.
I felt from the beginning the Iraq war was a bad thing.
In retrospect, I would have tried to avoid service in the first world war with American forces, the Spanish American War,and probably the Korean war except as a medic. I have never regretted taking care of anyone medically.
There are some very few necessary wars and I would have gladly served in those even if I couldn't have been a medic.
On the other hand, I love the women i have met hobbying and those friends with benefits. I can't remember ever having regretted making love.
there are all sorts of ways of classifying people into types, many pretty complicated. a simple one i need to remind myself of today and keep in mind is to remember that some would:
1) rather make war than love 2) rather make love than war 3) just don't know WTF
i need to remember: i am a 2 and can best hang out with 2s or maybe 3s. then there is the layer of possible difference between what one is and what one thinks one is. i need to remember that even more difficult than a type 1 is a type 1 who thinks of themself as a type 2.
in terms of the cost in personal energy making war just takes way more out of you and even when "successful" is less restorative.
making war is a loathsome costly necessity to be avoided unless there is no choice.
as for the memories.... there is no comparison which are sweeter. when war and love get mixed it is only some sort of peace that lets my memories remain bright and sweet. fortunately only one set of sweet memories is tarnished by seemingly unresolved conflict.
actually feeling lighter than this morning but still philosophical. getting older, my imperative is to collect the brightest, sweetest memories rather than bright and shiny things...
now I'm thoroughly confused. Perhaps because I haven't had my 2nd cup of joe yet. Going to get me some now and come back and read your memo again, and see if it becomes more clear.
so i did a stream of consciousness thing and was silly enough to post. the safe thing about talking to myself in public is that it is usually a secure communication channel that is pretty well encrypted.
