73367 commonwealth soldiers still classed as missing (now very old and missing)
I have family still classed as missing,
In the UK there is only 1 surviving soldier, 110 years old. And in the UK June 27 is becoming veterans day ( a little too late if you ask me)

We Brits honour our war dead every year.
We have Armistice Day.
The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, every year.
It’s the day France, Germany and Britain signed the peace accord which ended WWI.
And for those moments at 11am on cold, windy November mornings we, remember all our war dead. From long past wars till the present ongoing conflicts.
We remember them.

July 3rd, 1863 is the end of the horrific battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. More men die in this single engagement than in Veitnam. While many do not consider soldiers of either side as veterans, we must not forget the terrbile that has been paid for our freedoms today.
All men and women that wear the uniform and serve in any branch of the military deserve nothing less than humbled respect and eternal gratitude.
I salute all our brave soldiers, past, present, and future.
and our Veterans on veterans day.

I find it rather depressing to think about dead people every day of the year. It is better to just think about them around Election Day when their deaths can serve some useful purpose such as the continued consolidation of power of the Bush Regime.

I'm not who you responded to but I will say that they didn't give their live's for any of us twit's as you speak of. Most of the war's or conflict's (current one especially)we've been involved in are, and were, bullshit and it's a damn shame live's were so freely expended in them. On top of that every day our ability to say stupid shit disappear's and it's not due to us losing any war. I truely hate to see and think of any of them past and present dying or being injured for life. Not to mention all of the forgotten innocent civilian's who are just an afterminder of all the war's. War is shit and anyone who has the power to start one should also be required to lead the charge at the front line's. I'll bet you one thing if they had to be at the front there would be a hell of a lot less war's happening. It's all too easy to send someone else to do their dirty work. Anyone defending these idiot's who start these war's is an idiot all themselve's. The last thing patriotic is sending someone to die for no good reason.

i noticed but it was too late about the spelling, boy was a feeling like a twit, i thought it was me you were calling a twit etc thats why i became offensive. And on a day which another UK Serviceman has been killed in Afghanistan , I humbly apologise

But more than that, with every remembrance, I am thankful for those who served and particularly for those who have given their lives that I might enjoy the freedom they purchased for me.
Numbered among those, I have friends and also family.

I will honor and remember all the men/women who have fought and died for this country and for all
currently serving.
But this time it's personal.
I think about one in particular...
my daughter is currently in Iraq serving in the Air Force.
Not a hour goes by that I don't think about her, worry about her, pray for her.
It's difficult to explain to her children where Mommy is and when she is coming home.
Don't just limit yourselves to thinking of/honoring our soldiers to 1 or 2 days a year.
They deserve our thoughts, prayers, and support every day.
If not for them, we wouldn't be able to exercise the freedoms we celebrate today.
I will now get off my soap box.

Consequently, rarely a day goes by that I am not reminded to pray for their protection and well being. I greatly appreciate the efforts of your daughter and all those who work to maintain our freedoms.

73,367 missing. I happened to be reading John Keenan's book about WWI. In it, it has a picture of soldiers entrenched. Decomposing bodies surround both sides of the trenches.
Dante couldn't come up with such a circle of hell. 73,000 men went over the top into no-man's land, and became unknown soldiers.
The term wasn't coined till then.
War is a disease, no doubt. Those brave soldiers were the doctors trying to cure a sick world.
I keep seeing all these yellow ribbon's saying, "God Bless Our Soldier's". What the hell does that mean? Doesn't god know all and see all? If he does why would he let such horse shit such as terrorist attack's, war's, etc., etc. even happen in the first place? He must have known what those asshole's who hijacked the plane's and flew them into the tower's were going to do and he let them do it. He evidently knew the war was going to happen and he didn't do anything to stop that. So what good does it do to say, god, bless our soldier's? Aren't all human being's his children? Bless our soldier's to go kill some of your other children. That's a good one. Another forum I belong to, nothing related to sex, had someone make a post the other day questioning the war. That forum is very red to say the least. It was kind of a stupid issue to even bring up there but it might have just been made as a button pushing one. All the same the poster was trounced on. One guy actually said if they're not American's fuck'em, kill them all. I immediately pictured this asshole walking down a street in one of our major cities spitting on some homeless person on the sidewalk, an American. I guess just not the type of American he was referring to. It's a damn shame one of mankind's worst flaw's is the us against them mentality.

We live in a democracy. People have a right to write or speak many things that any one of us do not agree with. They can be completely misguided in their views, but that alone does not make them cowards.
People that have fought in wars bravely sometimes become critics of war. You should never call a person a coward unless you have taken time to understand why that person feel the way he or she does. Maybe the alias poster is a gutless coward that would hide behind a mask regardless of the situation. But is is also possible that the person is simply fed up with wars that they view as wrong, rightfully or wrongfully. To dismiss that person summarily is not a hallmark of bravery, or even thoughtfulness.
You're welcome. Glad to do it. And thank you all you young folks in Iraq and Afghanistan. You are making a difference. Trust me. You really are, though it may take a few years before everybody recognizes it. As an avid reader and writer of history, I see potential greatness in our present effort but history will be the final arbiter. In the meantime, stay safe, stay low, and welcome home in advance.
