What do you do to stay in shape?

Since my body is aching today, I was prompted to post this. I hit the gym for a heavy weights day (it's relative and I'm 58); military press and squats. After a long lay off from lifting, it was military press for 100 lbs and 175 lb squats. I've gotten up to 245 squats, 175 bench and 315 deadlift, but I'm nowhere near those numbers now. Yah, not heavy lifts, but I'm old and more an endurance athlete anyway.

I've seen some amazing female bodies in the past year since I started this, and just wondering what you all do to stay so fit? Gents chime in as well if interested...

I'm being facetious with that remark, mind you.

I don't work out, but as I get older I definitely understand the need to stay in shape.

I have back and knee problems, so jogging is out.

Walking has helped me lose weight.  I've still got 20 or 25 pounds to shed.

You are what you eat. Eat less, and more often.
Don't restrict your hunger either. Fat is good.
Eat meat. High fat meat will give you so much energy.
Just eat les, more often.
Eggs, every nut besides a peanut. Oats. (I make cookies)
Works whatever age you are.
This type of diet isn't really about what you eat (although that helps)
It's about how much, and how often you eat.

I'm not a diet fiend.  I just stopped eating a lot.  Dairy has almost been completely eliminated.  The only dairy I consume now is what's in the Monster Java drinks.

Those I abuse.

If it goes against your body type all you'll do is tear yourself up.  I've been working out for more than 20 years.  I used to run but it beat on my body too much.  Now I bike ride like a fiend -- indoor or out.  Do sit ups and reverse sit ups.  Light lifting.  Curls, triceps extensions, chest press, lat pulldowns.  I am a god.  The ladies love me.  Mainly because I have a HUGE...............................
wallet.

Blue, I guess you missed where I said I wasn't a diet fiend.  Meaning I don't obsess over calories or fat content like some people do.

So get off the bus or get thrown off.  Understand me?

I've got knee and back problems.  Jogging and running is something I've sworn not to do.  Weather permitting, I walk.

I'm thinking about joining a gym, but worry about weightlifting harming me more that helping me.

and I am excited to start kickboxing soon! I am working out a lot lately. I love it, it makes me feel great. I eat lots of vegetables, chicken, fish, and red meat here and there. I notice the more meat I eat I feel more sluggish. I am sticking to my current plan and  I am looking forward to seeing results this summer. ;-)

Once I get into the groove I do like working out. I go through phases of working out a lot, and then times where I do not do it enough.

Less food more often.
If you keep it up. You will generally have more energy.
And you may wind up eating more, and still getting fit.
Also water is your friend. At least 2 lit / day.
People tell me that isn't enough water. Some say 1 gal/ day.

Yup and I am excited!!! I love anything high intensity. I love watching ultimate fighting, and always liked the idea of amateur fighting. Would hate to bust up my face though. ;-) I will channel my energy into kickboxing and sex.

Have you asked a professional about working out with your back? I am sure you could do some sort of light weightlifting. I have a friend who has had two fusions in his neck and pretty bad back issues but he lifts weights and he says he feels better because of it.

Two fusions?  Wow!

I haven't.  I was going to speak to the owner or manager.

The weight loss has helped incredibly, but it tightens up occasionally.

Prior to the last year, I had a bit of an on/off switch with training which resulted in overtraining when I was home and not doing diddly when I was on the road (not so much out of desire, just got stuck in a routine and didn't adjust as necessary).  At home, I'd do a half hour of interval cardio on a stair mill in the morning, 1.5hrs of hot yoga, half hour break then 1.5 hrs of heavy lifting (12 week rotations of 6x5 and 10 set pyramids. yeah, something of a volume freak) with work sets for squats and deads @ +/-150%BW, chest and back @ +/-80%BW. About every other day, I'd do a PM session on the stair mill also. This was a 6-7 day/week routine.  I'd eat fairly clean at home as well.... but on the road... I'd be a carb stuffing, wine swilling slug. ;-) All this resulted in feeling like a 90yo half the time and a slug with digestive issues the other half.  Interestingly enough, my weight didn't fluctuate more than 5lbs and my size stayed a 0-2 throughout.

Moderation and consistency can be difficult for me unless I'm thoroughly intentional about it. ;-)

The last year I changed some habits, created new ones and revamped my training/diet routine.  I've been on a modified Paleo diet (love it and it's easy!) and haven't stepped foot in an actual gym for a year. Instead, I've been doing a cardio focused program where I run 3-4 miles a day and then do a half hour of BW/light DB exercises. This is a routine I can take on the road so I get it in at least 3 times a week when I travel and 5 times/week when I'm home. I also have done some yoga, but only sporadically.  Weight dropped, I leaned up a bit but lost some of the definition I'd had.  I guess I have a slightly more "runner's" look than a "weight lifter" look now.  Judging from the comments I've heard (in and out of the bedroom), its a good look on me! lol  And really great news - I don't feel like a 90yo anymore!  No creakiness and very little achiness (except the good kind a day after a barre class).

I also discovered quality tequila and Cuban cigars with al the time I spent in Mexico.  Never underestimate La Famila Reserva!  lol

This coming year I think I'll get back in they gym a bit (I miss squats!) - but keep things moderate - and keep up with the cardio focused routine that's been so good to me. Heck, I might even do a contest or two! ;-)

No Junk food, no fried food, no candy or sodas.  They are all difficult for me to digest, so my life is easier without them.  I feel better too.  Best of luck to you!

All kidding aside, working out with both cardio and free weights at least 4 days a week, dropped all sugar drinks and switched to water and tea, and I toss in the Insanity video when I am sure I won't throw up half way through it.

It is best to mix your work out up so your muscles don't become adjusted to it. If I don't get sore, I know I need to change a few things up. Atkins is also a great diet if you can do it the right way. Far too many people abuse it and end up in a ketosis state that begins using muscle for fuel. You need to really pay attention to your ketone levels whilst doing this, but you can drop an incredible amount of weight in only a short time, then slowly add the foods back that you like.

I used to run along the lake, but stopped and I plan to pick that up again. I have a treadmill, but it is not the same as being outside running or even a fast walk.

For me, the biggest challenge to losing weight is alcohol consumption....I LOVE my wine, and on Atkins you can only certain hard liquors.

there is no other way to increase resistance in order for muscles to grow.

even when doing push ups you are using your body as a weight.

I got a dog a few years ago. I walk him anywhere from 6 to 9 miles a day depending on the season. EVERY FUCKING DAY. At 58 I weigh 3 lbs less than when I was 28. Walking, who woulda thunk it.

First off, it depends on your genetics. Some are just born with high metabolisms, & others are not, & have to work harder at getting/staying in shape. Personally, I have a combination of high metabolism, & do not eat red meat, junk food(no chips or candy bars, etc), rarely eat out & cook at home instead, & do not drink(alcohol has a TON of calories). Also, little things can add up as well... such as parking far away from the front doors of the store you are visiting, or requesting high floors at hotels, & taking the stairs ONLY, & never the elevator.

With you on the scotch, although not the cigars. Glenlivet Nadurra and Laphroaig Quarter cask, ahh! Yes, those are polar opposites, but love 'em both. Plus, as London noted, if you're gonna drink (and I'm gonna) you'll do better diet-wise with liquor than wine.
