Does anyone take offense to out of towners posting on the local boards?

If so what type of post upsets you the most?

Is there anything you could suggest to make the out of towner feel more comfortable posting?

I ask this because I am always travelling and like to read and post on many of the local boards in the cities that I visit frequently.

Thanks for the question, jaejae. Living in an area where there is no local board, and traveling about half of the time, I have wondered the same thing. I have felt that "out of towner" feeling at times when posting on local boards.

Seems to me if you keep your posts positive, that helps.

I think an important part of the local boards is for out of towners to get to know about the local people and what is going on in cities they plan to visit.  Let me know if you are coming to Phoenix.

I'm from Atlanta and although I haven't posted to any other city boards, except obviously here on the National board, I like to think that I'm welcome to participate in other cities boards.

Well I also don't have a local board.  I regularly look at the board of someplace where I am going to travel.  I had one misunderstanding on the NYC board where someone tried to run me off but he didn't seem to be one of the regular posters so I don't know.  Every once in awhile, I get referred to on that board so I bet a lot of people have no idea exactly where I am from.  The Phoenix board has also been very nice to me as was the SF board.  Posted on Boston today without issue.

I think obviously if you trash the city, the board, or the providers you are asking for trouble.  If you are polite, appear to have done some review searches, and listen (read) before raising your hand to talk you will find most boards very accommadating and helpful.

...but out of country.  I live in the London, UK but I enjoy TER a lot and post on the local boards for cities I visit on my tours (NYC, Vegas, LA).  I like the boards to be lively and fun and I think most other people do too so I can't imagine local people not being happy with us visitors posting :)

My local Board is NY, and I think that by and large visitors from other areas are welcome to post there.  Their requests for information re providers they have interest in are answered by New Yorkers, as long as that individual is polite, and not interested in trashing anyone.  There have been some posters who were rude or inappropriate.  And these have been ignored or dealt with harshly.

When a "visitor" to NY posts for information, and that "visitor" has any presence on TER, like reviews and/or that little PM envelope next to his handle, most New Yorkers will help with the information he's asking for.  It's when someone unknown to the "community" as a whole posts, asks for something

I do alot of travelling and post here on the General Board, as well as NY, Las Vegas, and on occasion Florida.  I have yet to be treated poorly.

I only object to idiots posting ... and I don't care WHERE they come from.

My only exception is out of town providers posting things like

"Hi guys, I'm going to be in [your town] next week and I'd love to see you ... but if you can't make it, just send the money"

If you're traveling ... make it a vacation  (come to think of it ... what DO providers do on vacation ?  Rent an office and type?)

If you're having a weekend special ... buy an ad in the Easy Reader  (or for a few of you ... the Recycler)

Don't use the FREE boards to promote your 'for profit' activities.
