Since I get a lot of clients who are traveling and don't usually hobby they often don't have references and can be difficult to check, but there are alternate screening methods. Familiarize yourself with the habits of LE in your area so you know what to look for when you get a call. Also assume that anyone who isn't forthcoming with the info you ask or "give[s] you the run around" when you ask for references is LE and end the call. A caller like that is either a police officer looking to entrap you or a client too creepy to have any good references; such a client may refuse to give you his info lest you might find him on a blacklist somewhere--perhaps for something serious like assaulting or robbing a provider. If you can't screen him, don't see him.
If your prices are low for your area you can expect to attract the dregs of your locale, so don't sell yourself short. Jerks are cheap, and setting your prices a bit higher will filter some of them out. There are some polite and reliable gentlemen on a budget, but generally the higher caliber clientele have thicker wallets and may even overlook you altogether if your prices are too low. Don't be afraid to tell a client your rates are not negotiable either--haggling is rude, and you shouldn't let anyone think that your boundaries are flexible or that your time isn't worth what you ask.
I have been having trouble with clients canceling at the last minute in addition to clients not wanting to be screened. I've been getting a lot of these guys lately too. I direct the guy to my website when I ask for screening information because I have a list of everything I require to screen. If he keeps trying to BS his way around it, I tell him to contact me again when he is ready to provide me with everything I ask for.
If I haven't gone too far out of my way for an appointment that is canceled last minute, I'll sometimes give him one more chance, depending on just how last-minute we're talking. I think this is extremely lenient. If I have gone out of my way to meet with him or if I'm walking out the door when he cancels, I won't book another appointment with him.
I treat an appointment like would any other appointment to a well paid professional and if I need to cancel I try to give 24 hour notice. The one time I had to cancel with only a few hours notice (kid got sick) I rescheduled and paid 50% extra on top of her donation to make up for the last second cancellation with out being asked to do so. If I had to cancel with no notice I would try to make arrangements to pay for her time as if it happened. I expect you ladies to value my time and I feel I owe you the same in return. I will not cancel with less than 24 hours notice unless I have to and I expect the same from her.

Simple... No/inadequate screening info by the third request results in earning a spot on your personal DNS list and every appointment requires a nonrefundable 50% deposit. If a gent cancels after paying your nonrefundable deposit, it's a judgement call whether or not to put him on your personal DNS.

Cancellation notices will depend. If it's all local, 24 hours is nice on all sides for the reason of cancelling hotel rooms. It's also nice for purposes of planning. Regardless, some notice should always be given regardless of how late, rather than no contact and letting them wonder.
Dates with folks coming from out of town are different, to a degree. I say that you always do the best you can. Minimum 24 hours, or early the morning of the appointment (if it's an afternoon/evening appointment).
Don't forget that folks (ladies and gents) don't always have access to their hobby phone/email.
If I ask for references and I get the run around I do not respond after that.I respect a person's time if they cannot respect mine that is somebody I do not want to see.Either he has a reference or not .I think many will agree at one point they have been cancelled on 24hr notice or less.I have had a gentleman cancel on me 2hrs before appointment time with a weak excuse I will never consider seeing this person in the future and I am perfectly okay with that.On the other hand I have had gentleman cancel 24hr or more notice that did have legit reasons for cancelling a couple of them I have saw after and had a wonderful time a true gent will make it up to you.If a person knows they cannot keep an appointment they should contact the other person as soon as possible so they can make alternative plans.However,not all people feel this way and there are some ladies once you cancel the only way to see her is to pay a deposit or a cancellation fee.
I know it's part of the game and it happens but if it's a multiple hour date and I'm on tour and I get an email a few hours before the date to cancel I won't see the guy again even if he offers to prepay. I do have to refuse other people sometimes to make room on my schedule. If it's only a one hour date, although I'm not happy, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and rebook him one more time but I don't do a third round of trying and some of you may have received not so nice emails from me when pulling that one. I know I'm harsh but some hobbyist - a minority thank God - don't think out time is valuable. If I cancel my lawyer's appointment last minute you better believe he will charge me the visit. Well I'm no different and if gentlemen can't see it that way I prefer not having them on my dance card.
If I'm in my home town it doesn't bother me as much as I don't have to go thru the same expenses but I still think more notice is a sign of respect.
I don't respond to ads if I can't research the lady. You shouldn't respond to inquiries if you can't research the client. I had to cancel with a lady on tour several years ago. Cancelled a week in advance, but still felt obliged to get her a couple of gift cards as a professional courtesy.
