this is what I would call, 'the opposite' of a hobby date!

actually, it does not sound like much fun.  While I've been on inexpensive dates, those were mostly with long time girlfriends... very long time....  When I go out - I enjoy the fun things... mainly cause it is a treat for me too!!!  

he is a sad dude...  my only thought, he must not have kids.

It was an interesting idea, but done in a silly way. If he was trying for a date under a fixed amount of money, it could have been easily accomplished without looking absurd.

Wine + blanket + sunset = under $20

Art galleries + museums + whacky ethnic lunch =  under $20

You just need to be creative.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't...

The guy needed a story and already decided before he started the story how he wanted it to end.

I am sure we can all come up with more creative ideas.
