I know thre is a P&R Board, but this isn't to debate religious philosphy so much as to inquire as to whether and how you have encountered same.

Since this begins a week where religious issues will be in the news given the start of the Conclave in Rome on Tuesday, I thought it would be a apt subject.  (Read:  I've cleaned the house and my provider won't be over for a few hours so I have some time on my hands.)

One influence of religion on my hobbying is tantra, which is an off-shoot of Buddhism; and therefore my very favorite religion of all.

The only other circumstance I can recall is a pretty blonde spinner I saw several times who sported a large silver crucifix pendant that would crash into my forehead while she rode me in cowgirl.  Being Jewish, I must say I found it kinky to the max, and could have been a precursor to my mashochist stage.

And, of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that I almost always shout out "oh God" as I come.  I sure hope that isn't considered taking the name of the Lord in vain, or I've got some serious karma-ass-kicking coming up.

Well, a lapsed one actually.  Why is not really relevant.  Besides, it would take hours and hours and hours for me to list my beefs.  I believe in God and I consider myself Catholic.  I just don't believe in the Catholic Church and their man-made, un-Biblical laws anymore.

I got to a point where I refused to let Catholic guilt interfere in my life anymore.  I figure God gave us what he did for a reason and they work the way they do for a reason.

If people have an issue with that, too bad.  Blame the Creator.

Have fun and be safe.

I'm not a big fan of organized religion.
More people die in the name of God. It's pretty ironic.
I hope one day the masses won't need the fear of God to keep them in line.
It's really just a book of laws you know. Things that should come naturally.
It's not going to happen in my lifetime. But..
One day technology, and religion will become one.
Whatever the internal soul is. It will be identified.
I just hope we don't blow up the world before it happens.

So My approach to that is..
If there are some pearly white gates up there.
I'm going to need a lawyer to plead my case. :D

One of the gospels that didn't make it into the Bible has her as Jesus's wife doesn't it?  I guess I'm morphing this into an "I married my ATF" thread.
The Gospel of Philip says that they were "companions."  The original text's wording for companion could be construed as spouse.

As for the prostitute claim, the infamous "Muddle of the Marys" comes into play.  It's a foregone conclusion that Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute.  None of the canonical gospels explicitly states she was. Pope Gregory I said she was in 591, but in 1969, that position was reversed by Pope Paul VI.

Translations of the original texts have routinely inserted things the original writers never intended.

None of the Ten Commandments explicitly forbids hobbying or prostitution.

There are commandments against adultery and coveting thy neighbor's wife, but there's a huge gray area in them, and I believe you're intelligent enough to figure out what that gray area is, so I won't get into it.

Murders can repent. So a little nookie for cookie isn't all that bad.

2. Jesus, and many other people back then saw hookers.

Look, as a Catholic or Christian, there is no conceivable argument for prostitution being moral. Lets just both agree we aren't following Christ's teaching on this. I don't claim to be on a higher moral ground than an escort. It's even Steven. Whether it should be legal, that's a whole different story.

I may be sinning, but others have committed more grievous sins.  It's all a matter of degree.

Put it this way: if there is a hell, it's awfully crowded.  Did not Jesus have a tax collector among His Apostles?  Certainly betrayal and greed are worse than a hooker giving me an orgasm, wouldn't you say?

I believe one does.  I'm just not sure if any man-made writings are accurate.  But I can see your side.  If you're going by the Old Testament account, that deity is definitely not one I'd worship.

The proof that atheism exists needs to only go so far as "I am an atheist", as all that needs to be proven is that a person follows a systemic approach to the God question. On the other hand, the Abrahamic God's existence is much more complex to prove, since it describes an objective being with claimed properties that, taken together, make it completely impossible to prove the God's existence without the God willing it so.

Everyone here is following their own version of morality. Not even just here, where it's obvious there's things being ignored even by those who claim to be of a certain faith, but nearly everyone worldwide selectively ignores portions of their born religion because they simply don't believe in that bit.

Most of us have started with a book based on a "god" created thousands of years ago as an omniscient narrator and character wrapped in one entity, but we're finding our own way in life anyway, and doing what we think is right - there isn't a single person who would argue in favor of everything either the church, or the bible says, and for good reason. Most of the Christians I know haven't even read the whole thing, despite being in things like CCD or Jewish religious schools for decades - and the churches prefer it to be that way, because if someone did read the whole thing, they'd realize believing in this book is as backwards and uncivilized as the time it was written in.

Just an example: Deuteronomy 21:18-21 [Torah], stone your children if they disobey you. Implied to be the correct way to act by Jesus himself in Mark 7:10-12 [Bible], where he disparages the Pharisees for not following that command in certain circumstances where it can benefit them.

There's a reason why laws don't work unless you personally believe in them - people speed because they don't believe the speed limit is correct, people do drugs because they don't believe drug laws are correct, and on and on. The same exact concept applies to religion - nearly nobody believes in every single word of their preferred religious text, but people desperately cling to the notion that someone out there is watching, and no matter what choices are made, if they believe in him, they'll be with his boring ass in heaven forever instead of burning for eternity, because that possibility is fucking frightening if you have no way of dismantling the claim.

...well, maybe freezing, depending on which words in the text you choose to believe.

It would be more appropriate to say that carpentry could have been one of the things Jesus did before His ministry.

Again, the translation is likely to blame.  The word used in the original Greek is "tecton," which only means "handworker."  Jesus could have been a jack of all trades, working with wood, stone, and other things.

Not at all.

But as I said, Jesus forgave worse.  He forgave a fellow Jew who was a pariah among Jews and seen as a collaborator with their Roman overlords and undoubtedly lied and cheated and diminished Jews' lives and even made him an apostle.

Edit: I would also reference you to the parable of the pharisee and the tax collector.

I can't believe in god without evidence especially with so much evidence that contradicts the bible. Not the least of which being that there is no historical evidence of Jesus at all. Not a single book of the bible was written soon enough after his death to have been written by someone who was alive when he was given the life expediencies then. And somehow though he was essentially given a roman trial there is no documented evidence of any of it by the Roman's either. All that aside though there is simply to much evidence to refute most of the assertions of the bible.

I don't go so far as to say I am an atheist though because I am not arrogant enough to pretend to be able to say there is no higher force in the universe.

I choose to follow the teachings of Jesus regardless of if I think he ever actually existed or not. I think his teachings are a great model to try to live by. I reject the rest of the teachings and also the restrictions of the church though. I do not really believe in sin and I surely do not believe that if there IS a god he gives a shit about where I stick my penis.

If you will read my OP, I clearly state that I did not want this to be a discussion of religious philosopy, but rather interesting stories of religion and the hobby.

But, I guess the desire to sound off about what the Bible says, and what God wants (As if anyone is really qualifed to opine on that.) is too tempting to resist.

So again I ask:  Does anyone have an interesting story of a circumstance where hobby and the religion came together (so to speak?)

For example, has anyone ever done it in a church?

Here's another example from the scrapbook of mrfisher:

I did therapy for many years with a Zen trained therapist. (He had transmission from a very highly respected Japanese master.)  One day he gave me a mantra to repeat each day, and said to keep the slip of paper in my wallet at all times.  It read:  Kwan seum bosal.

Many years later I happened to be visiting a strange town (Phoenix, as I recall.) with the SO.  The SO had an internet galpal down in Tuscon and toodled down there so I had a day to myself which I decided to make the most of, seeing what Phoenix's MPs had to offer me.

It was kind of slim pickin's at best I found out until my last stop of the day, an AMP.  I wasn't expecting too much from the place except maybe a decent massage and HE, but then as I opened my wallet to pay the lass, the piece of paper with Kwan Seum Bosal fluttered out onto the floor.  The gal bent over to recover the scrap and saw what it said.  She then looked at me and said:  Kwan Seum Bosal is my religion!

One of the best lays I've ever had.

Thanks Dave (my therapist, RIP) wherever you are now.

Now, you guys and gals go.

(By the way, the scrap of paper is now tacked on to my desk at home, for safe keeping.)

You can be tantric within various creeds. Tantra has a  couple different meanings, but overall it's more of an approach or even a ritual type isn't it?

Be that as it may...

I don't think you can be an active, practicing member of any commonly identified judo-christian "religion" or group unless you are either at odds with your group, in denial or hypocritical, or unless you believe that whatever you choose to believe is OK by God or the Lord or Lemme or whomever you think is in charge of the universe-at-large.

In any case, I'd imagine most people that are religious and hobby either have to handle tons of guilt, or repress certain ideas to make it through the day, since fucking-at-will is not considered OK by most such standards.

I have no idea what's what, and I say that as a former devout member of such religious groups. All I know is I was born this way (horny) and have no SO right now to scratch my itch.
