I think prostitution should be legal. It is a victimless crime, and can potentially generate lots of tax dollars. If regulated, it would be even safer in terms of STDs and violence. I'm sure this has been brought up in state congress many times. Are there any powerful congressmen in California who are pro-prostitution? I think the people should have a say in this... I'm sure there are politicians who hobby regularly. The insanity has to stop. These women need to be protected and treated like people in the eyes of the law.
...people bring it up everyday, but its orginazations that have strong influences (ie. churches, schools) that bring them right back down. Thats how it got stopped here in Vegas (in 1978). There are plenty of people, and plenty who are in power even, that are for it. But one individual, even a congressmen cannot bring about a new law-- its the masses. The poeple have to be for it. And no matter what people truly think, few are willing to openly voice the legitimization of this profession. Just like you wouldnt go into work tomorrow and tell everyone that you are on this board (unless you work in a strip club), you wouldnt want to be at a pro-prostitution rally, or go door to door with a petition.
No one wants to look a church goin little old lady or the soccer mom from your kids PTA, in the face and so "yaaaay hookers"! And its them and people like them, who are the ones getting the bills sqaushed. As much as we would like to think we want it-- we-- as a people in the whole and total country, arent ready...
But I agree about the tax thing-- as much of our tax dollars go down the drain to investigate, and pay extra police officers to entrap us, and house we "criminals", double or perhaps even triple could be generated each year from taxing working girls...
Heres one to consider though, that you hardly hear about: the standards and costs for medical coverage could go up all around--what with having to cover people in such a high risk proffession...
Legalization means regulation. That means anonymity is entirely erased. All providers would have to be licensed and all their appointments documented. Do you want your name on an invoice for a provider the same as one for car repair? I don't. Also, some of the best providers would immediately cease operations if they had to become licensed and "outed" as a sex worker.
If the government legalizes it, you can bet it will be regulated like that. The fact that prostitution is illegal is what keeps everybody under the radar... thats right where I want to stay.
Have you been to Europe? Your argument is just about totally disproven there and in Aus. You can have one sided regulation. Wouldn't you like to see a bill of health before you went ahead?
it shouldn't be illegal either. Personally, I don't really find any distinction between paying for certain activities directly, or paying for them indirectly (read: dinner date, dancing, whatever, gifts - get the drift?) so why punish two people who aren't hurting anyone and only pleasing themselves...
OR
Perhaps just a single proprietorship - or maybe even a partnership! then you even pay taxes! - What a concept...
