That post (of mine) did indeed turn into a tobacconist's nightmare. You'd think on a hobbying board, you'd find some people who were more sanguine about other humans' chosen vices ... geez ... especially given the number of cigars consumed in proximity to providers, at least according to all the reviews by someone named Clinton. LOL. :)

But good luck to you. I am down to about one pipe-full every other day, and I personally don't consider myself "addicted" to tobacco at all -- I use when I choose, and often "test" myself by resisting for a week or two, just to make sure. It's like a fine wine, something for a foodie or a gourmand to add to his toolkit of life-enhancers.

And by the way, my 5K run time is down to 24 minutes, and my body-fat is (thanks to Atkins!) getting back to my High School percentages. So, don't go yakkin' about health to me!

Definitely go cold-turkey, definitely use all the pharmacological replacements available. Try "smoke free" off the TV. Also, my suggestion for is, to have something to replace the old rituals with. Perhaps you could learn card tricks, or take up whittling, or keep your hands busy fixing car engines, or something like that.

turned into a Tobbacconists nightmare. I posted admitting to using smokeless tobacco. Several thoughtful members of the board
made mention of the possible horrible consequences of its use.
Today I got a prescription for the "patch" and when this final tin in my pocket is finished I'm going to try to kick this  13year old habit of mine.
Members of the Board please pardon me if I'm abnormally terse or angry in my "rants" in the coming days.
THIS AIN'T GONNA BE EASY!.

ladies; I'll be needing some extra TLC for sure.

Hopefully with the help of the "patch" and some o'l fashioned Grit I'll succede and be able to better put the money saved to my FAVORITE vice.(anyone guess what that might be???)

 Wish me luck.

As someone who's currently still trying to quit a nine year cigarette habit, I can sympathize with you.  The best advice that I can give you is take it day by day and realize that the only way that you can fail is to QUIT TRYING!!!  I'm getting ready to try out this new product called smoke-away.  It's supposed to be all natural herbs that not only helps with cravings, but also helps with the mental and emotional withdrawal from nicotine.  I've linked the information page below.  Best of luck from one nicotine addict to another.....

Jaclyn :)

I stopped cold turkey 6 weeks ago.  I just is not easy at all, after 35 years.  But it had to be done, I had good motivation ( a medical scare), and so far it's working.  I just hope I don't chew someone's head off for now.  But do whatever it takes to quit.  You'll be a better person.

I quit smoking in October... it was NOT easy by any means and I must say that I was having major episodes of crankiness for months afterwards... but I did it and you can do it too!!! Believe me if I could do this, I really believe that ANYONE CAN! The patch helped me enormously... I know a lot of people are against using the patch or anything else, but I believe that anything that can help you get over that nasty habit is a GOOD THING.  Plus I think if I'd experienced the nic fits full-fledged with no help, I never could have done it.

Just hang in there and buy TONS of gum, candy, and other munchables. Who cares if you gain five lbs? (I did not, I actually lost a few, amazingly enough!)  You may have to change habits for a while... for the first two weeks I didn't do much on the computer as that was a big hot zone for me. I also didn't visit any bars for the first month. Please keep yourself from situations you know are triggers!!!

Good luck, stay strong :)

I know what I am about to say may be controversial, but it is working for me.

I tried cold turkey once or twice and I couldn't or perhaps wouldn't follow through with it.

Here is what I am doing, and although I have not completly quit, I consider this  a work in progress.

I smoked 3/4 to one pack a day for about 15 years. Those were the days before the no smoking laws ans you could smoke at your desk. (remember those?).

Then I came to the conclusion that I was spending more time on smoke breaks and I wasn't getting anything done at work.

I had already agreed not to smoke in the car, or in the house, as a  courtesy to my SO at the time.

I managed over a period of three months to cut back to four cigaretes per day. Then I was laid off and I decided I needed some additional help. I am in recovery so I applied the 12 step principles to my ongoing addiction. Not to digress but "Nicotine Anomymous" may be something for you to look into.

Today, while I admit 3 years later, I have not quite entirely. However, after smoking 15-20 cigarettes per day, everyday, (even when I was ill with bronchitis), today I am down to one (1) cigarette per day, two at the most.

My Doctor says at thsi point my dependence is completely psychological. I know people say that gradual wihdrawal is not the answer, but is has worked for me. However you do it GOOD LUCK!

Wow, more power to you! I know that some people do well with the gradual cutting back method, that never would have worked for me. I think even moreso than the nicotine addiction, I also had the whole mental "hand to mouth" thing going on as a habit!!!!

Just a note about the patch... I know some folks have a hard time wearing it. I think you have to give it a fair chance and get used to it! The patch itched like CRAZY on me every time I put one on for the first 15 or so minutes it was on... and then went away. But for a while, that itching was the excuse I used not to quit. Don't! Anything is better than smoking!

They also have those new nicotine-less cigarrettes!

Best of luck everyone!

Anyone quitting, also might check out quitsmokingsupport.com :)

Man, I also need to quit, but don't want to. Is that stupid or what? (Rhetorical question). Let me know how it goes. I have been thing of hypnosis, the patch, cold turkey, etc.

Card tricks?  Whittling?  How about MORE HOBBYING!!!???

This board is more and more amazing, and more and more a community, and if you quit using smokeless tobacco, then your associating here with many nameless fellow hobbyists will have done you more good than your favorite vice could do in a month!

Very best wishes for success.
