There is a lot to the type of "power play" you are talking about.  For some it can be a fun play time.  For some it is a lifestyle choice.  For some it can cross the line into abuse.  The key is two consenting adults that have fun together.  In the escort world it is difficult to move beyond "play time" as deeper levels of play require much deeper levels of trust.  If you have built that with your regulars...more power to you! I see that switch as someone having a preferred position(either dom or sub), but then, depending on whom they are with and the dynamic, feel comfortable switching. Kind of like bisexuality, the grey area between heterosexuality and homosexuality.

I came to this reasoning as it seems to be logical to me. I am not a part of that world so I am not versed in what actually goes on or the correct definitions

Some people are bi but have a leaning toward one sex in particular. I would hesitate to say many ladies who are bisexual in this game lean more toward men but if a type of woman that they were attracted to came along, she would happily indulge.  

To address the preference angle, sort of like this analogy, I like chicken and fish. One day I desire more chicken and on another day, the fish appeals to me. My overall preference is for chicken and I consume more chicken than fish.

There are many people for whom switching is a natural state! I'd get bored being in the dominant role all the time or being in the submissive role all the time. (Although there are definitely people out there who do pick one role and stick to it). Kink is so much more than just the D type and s type interaction- the dynamics between two (or more!) kinksters are incredibly varied and subtle, and can sometimes change at the drop of a hat.

Some people I exclusively top, some people I exclusively bottom to. It depends on our personal dynamic. I have to say, though, my favorite way to play is fighting it out... It is, if power exchange is the experience you're talking about. It doesn't *always* have to be the same dynamic, unless you're talking 24/7 TPE- and that type of interaction is pretty nonexistent in P4P situations. With good reason.

This is for SOME cases, not all:

A person with someone MORE dom becomes submissive.  That same person with someone more SUB becomes dominant.  

In the animal kingdom, a new Big Dog (chimp, monkey, coyote, etc) comes along and takes over the pack and the former alpha male "dom" is either crawling and subbing to the newbie or leaves the pack.  If the new Big Dog gets snuffed in a fight, accident, hunted, it's not long before a former sub becomes the new dom
