Can anyone reccomend any software to clean up internt usage records. I use a laptop provided by my employer to access TER and other similar sites and want to clean up any trail I'm leaving.
I don't know any but at the workplace, there's a way to trace which computer is hitting which websites at the internet router. If they're doing this, scrubbing your computer won't be enough.
There is a technology called WebSense that can get installed on routers.
What happens is that your computer requests connection to a website. This request foes to the router. The router forwards this request to the internet and when it comes back the website gets forwarded to your computer. The router records this info in a table connecting the hardware address of your computer with the website address.
WebSense records this data too. If your company installs this, they have no obligation to tell you since the computers are their property not yours.
So feel free to wipe out your hard drive or "accidentally" spill a Pepsi on your computer, but there's no way to be completely sure except to stop. Or when someone higher up the food chain tells you to stop - but do you want to find out that way?
If you want to make your internet browsing private, you can connect to a VPN server first using the Microsoft VPN client on Windows. After then all communication between your pc and the VPN server is encrypted, and there is no way for your company to intercept the contents of your communications including e-mails you send and web sites visited.
This wouldn't work though if your company is blocking the PPTP port used for the outgoing connection between your PC and VPN server.

However, it really depends on how deeply they investigate the usage. They will know that you installed Window Washer. You would then need to uninstall it before you hand it back, and would need to edit evidence of the Window Washer install out of the registry. Of course then, you could screw up the registry.
It's far easier just to use your own laptop or hand held and not the company's.
A simple web proxy will also cashe all of your surfing activity if you are stupid enough to uese the employers connection.
If you just want to cean the computer, however I'd look into the porgrams mentioned above. If employer finds the program, just say you use it to protect company data given how easy it is to steal computers...
this is an awesome little freeware utility that will wipe out your browser cache, temp files and all the random junk windows generates in the course of daily use but never bothers to erase (until your computer slows down to the point you buy a new one - hmmm, I smell a conspiracy).
