For the science-minded only, some interesting new brain research below.  For the non science-minded, pass this post by quickly!

We knew that the avPFC was responsible for the ability to not engage in impulsive behavior which is rewarding in the short term but harmful in the long term.  But we now see that it is specifically the degree of the avPFC's interaction with the Nacc which accounts for this.

The real question, of course, is the degree to which avPFC-Nacc interaction can be increased through the creation and strengthening of neural pathways, as a result of cognitive therapy.  Can "talk therapy" and the resultant changes in thinking patterns cause physical changes in the brain?

Ultimately, third-party health care payers may look to measurable physiological changes in the brain as a measure of the efficacy of treatment.

In the meantime, don't let the little head get you into too much trouble!

Abstract
Human decisions are guided by "desire" or "reason," which control actions oriented toward either proximal or long-term goals. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess how the human brain mediates the balance between proximal reward desiring and long-term goals, when actions promoting a superordinate goal preclude exploitation of an immediately available reward option. Consistent with the view that the reward system interacts with prefrontal circuits during action control, we found that behavior favoring the long-term goal, but counteracting immediate reward desiring, relied on a negative functional interaction of anteroventral prefrontal cortex (avPFC) with nucleus accumbens (Nacc) and ventral tegmental area. The degree of functional interaction between avPFC and Nacc further predicted behavioral success during pursuit of the distal goal, when confronted with a proximal reward option, and scaled with interindividual differences in trait impulsivity. These findings reveal how the human brain accomplishes voluntary action control guided by "reason," suggesting that inhibitory avPFC influences Nacc activity during actions requiring a restraint of immediate "desires."

The "new research" seems like an obvious rehash... they only found the interaction. Of course there's some interaction and quite predictable too. lmfao  Where's ((Duhh)) when you need em.

One part of the brain wants immediate satisfaction while the other wants long term. But my question is,  why do you assume that getting laid is an impulsive behavior or a bad behavior?  The assumption of categorizing 'getting laid' as impulsive behavior is plain dumb IMHO.

Grand scheme of things, the "Re-productive" behavior helps promote "productive" behavior. This gets into a philosophical debate but the mate with the best characteristics gets the best partner, so that they can get together and reproduce. Humans are a glorified version of an infectious virus, with a built-in desire to procreate.

I know it has made me work harder so that I can make more money and hobby more with as many gorgeous ladies as possible without the baggage of a relationship. It is no different from wanting to get that promotion or wanting to start a new venture. (ie: productive behavior )

I read it because I did want to read his post, Why did you read it if you was not interested in "psychobabble"? Next time just skip it and everyone wins. OK?

That is your first mistake. I never assume anything in any post is at all important. I also try not to think all that much when reading the TER boards as it leads to head-aches. Quit thinking and this place is mch more fun!!!!

yes, it's interesting. But I only see the records of BOLD, which indirectly reflects functional connectivity in between some brain regions. They might also try to measure ASL, then the results/their interpretation sound more convincing.
