Veronica's life was far from the glamorous movie.... However, the movie was made and it certsainly grabbed my attention. I have to say, the general public is NOT going to be interested in what this woman had to say or what her life was really like if it were depicted in the movies. I for one, am a better person for finding this movie and discovering a woman like her existed. I probably would not have, if it weren't for my dear friend lending me the movie to watch. AFter watching the movie, I became curious as to what she was really about and wanted to know more about her..
I, like all of you, are far from perfect and glamorous like the movie..lol
I will leave you with this one point.... because of the movie, books or whatever way we found about her, we are all benefiting in one way or another, and having this discussion.
Writer in Sixteenth Century Venice", by Margaret F. Rosenthal.
She was a very interesting woman. Her life was an act of self-creation, and a response to the limitations of the times in which she lived. She possessed powerful intellectual integrity.
The movie doesn't get it all, of course, but still a very good film.
This woman could have easily been set in our time as well. Her limitations are set by the time as we are. I hold myself very close to what Veronica had and find the way she relates to her suitors very similar.
Her education, gift, and demeanor is somthing that many would find and do find threatening. Many even become jealous and want to find a way to bring it down so to speak as a result of thier jealousy or lack of evolvement.
It reminded me of how far we have come along and how much we equally have not.
Her father was a drunk who squandered much of the family money and some of her dowry on drink and gambling and was a weak person in her life. She entered into an arranged marrige with a doctor as a young teenager before ever entering the courtesan profession and they had a child. She was unhappy and divorced him and was forced to sue to gain back her dowry. After the divorce, she became a courtesan.
Since her father was a drunk, he wasn't around much and was not a strong influence in her life, except to say she learned early not to depend on a man.
Veronica was born in the citizen class at a time when just being born in Venice was NOT enough to warrant "citizenship". You had to be of the distinct class to be considered a citizen and obtain the rights that went with it.
The film Dangerous Beauty is NOT an accurate depiction of her life at all but a bodice-ripper loosely based on her life. Her real life story is far more interesting than the film which would is nothing more than a filmed version of a Harlequin Romance.
I recommend the book "Veronica Franco: Letteri Familiari" It gives an in depth look at the woman who was not afraid to stand up to the misogynists of her day and defend courtesans from defamation and strived to instill in the heart of minds that she and others of her profession were living breathing human beings with thoughts, feelings and desires just like everyone else.
