It’s not unusual to hear “monger” misused to mean “buyer.” In fact a monger is a seller (e.g., the Bible refers to sellers of fish as fishmongers). Today the word has a negative connotation, which is why its modern use is pretty much limited to the likes of “warmonger,” “rumormonger,” and, as to the matter at hand, “whoremonger.” A hobbyist is not a whoremonger. That would be a pimp.

...I did look look it up once though because of it's use here by many as preferred term for hobbyist.
 I don't remember now which dictionary but one of the many definitions given was about purchasing not selling.
