I've been asked this question (phrased differently, of course) more than once now.  I always have defaulted to cbj because I'm thinking, why is she asking, unless to telegraph she has Herpes (active or inactive)? The question makes me nervous.
Of course I'd prefer BBBJ.  Am I missing something?  My massage therapist doesn't ask me if I'd like her to wear latex gloves or not.  Remember now, the providers are asking me MY preferance and would go either way. Help!

Some guys are ultra safety conscious and don't want to risk a bbbj with anyone. I imagine it's a little embarrassing to ask the chick to put a rubber on you for a BJ. I think when they ask, they're just saving the guy the potential embarrassment. I've been asked. My default is bbbj of course.
