I've been looking for a discrete computer washer program...  one that cleans all the tracks, overwrites so not recoverable by some tech guy a lawyer would hire to screw me down the road.

Most sound like they're covering for a criminal enterprise...
Thanks, skb

Overall I'd recommend you go to the store and buy one. They are all going to basically do the same thing.

They will take all the unused bits on your hard drive and convert them all to randomized 01's

Keep in mind any file that is still on your computer won't be effected. In otherwords, you need to delete all the files you want gone, and THEN run the program.

If you need someone who knows how to find all those files that's a different issue.

I'm for hire in the obvious location if interested :) Else it's a catch22 of who to have find (and see) and delete them.

Also keep in mind that if you ARE facing serious issues and think you might have a hard drive seized, no program will make this work perfectly.

You'd want to absolutely erase it by putting it near a huge magnet. Then unscrewed it, take the disc out of the drive and burn it.

I finally found our previous discussion of this but am looking for more specific program advise, especially a program with a better name.  You'd think (knowing how many guys surf the web) that someone would have such a product.

Privacy Mantra comes to mind.

I wasn't sure if you were looking for a recommendation or complaining that the programs are all so obvious about their purposes.

If you want discretion then you may want to not use a shortcut to the program, but have it as an "unknown" exe on your HD.  You could then set it up as a scheduled task to run at 3am on Tuesday and set Window Washer to wash at 3:30am. Leave your PC on and it'll be clean in the morning.  One of the settings on Window Washer will shut it down after the wash, so unless someone was using your PC at 3:30am, they wouldn't see it running. Not much you can do about having it as a scheduled task.

It has the features to do some heavy duty overwriting using a number of algorithms and passes.  The feature you might find most comforting is that it will wash "free and slack space."  When your browser deletes something, it won't overwrite.  Windows Washer will go in and overwrite all of the unused space on your HD.

Like most of these programs, it's only as smart as the programmer who decides what files need to be overwritten to maintain privacy.

Good Luck

It's free and it does what you're talking about: cleans up your free space. It will also erase and overwrite files or your recycle bin.  And it's free.
