save more lives and property damage, especially for those who dare to drive under the influence. Of course that opens another bag of worms concerning an inebriated person being in control of a self driving car.

self driving cars that are being created?

I personally think it’s a bad idea. As we all know, sooner or later there is going to be a “glitch in the Matrix” and something could go wrong. Something could go very wrong. What if one of these cars experiences a short in the wiring or just goes Stephen King “Christine” crazy. I just think it’s a really bad idea and someone is going to get hurt or even die. I understand some inventions being helpful, but some just make us (people) more and more lazy. I feel like if you can drive, then you should drive. The only benefit in my opinion of a self driving car would be for someone who is disabled and would like a little more independence. Even then, it’s still a huge risk

Even in rush hour traffic driving can be fun. My motto: it's not the destination, it's the finish line.  Some might want to be driven. That's why taxis were invented. For me, I want to be in control.  I can't believe they're using the euphemism "autonomous" to describe a self driving car. Autonomous is what we have now.

Self driving cars will greatly reduce accidents, deaths and traffic.

People who can't get around now or want more autonomy due to a physical health issue will be able to greatly increase the quality of their life by this technology.

As for the "something could go wrong" argument, something is wrong now. There is much more inherent risk with humans at the wheel as 35,000 auto deaths and hundreds of thousands more people that are maimed on account of it will attest.

And it will affect our little hooker world. Someday this new tech they will put ROGM out of a job. LOL

Just think what it would be like now if everyone obyed the speed limit.

I can't see how SDC will improve traffic conditions.

SDC will likely cause an increase of volume on the roadways. I also think that SDC will dumb people down to the point that they wont remember how to operate a MV.

They can detect an accident or a road closure and plan a different route. And like I said, since there would be far less accidents, that would reduce the traffic as well.

Those other routes will receive the overflow traffic, and become clogged.

Less accidents wont change the amount of volume on the road.

There is also the fact that technology ALWAYS fails at some point, self driving cars will be a disaster.

... if autonomous cars become the norm, it will become like a mass transit train system.

if it is properly serviced and maintained. I am actually working on certain parts of the self-driving car technology and have a good understanding of how it works. The only challenge will be long term maintenance costs and keeping the sensors and technology in good shape with regular testing. The main challenge is how to reduce costs on this maintenance and long term viability of the sensors - we have to make replacement easy and not very costly to make is a successful model.

Don't want to get all serious on TER board, but self-driving cars will be on roads sooner than you think and your worries are as unfounded as y2k worries...

just to bring the thread back "on topic"

Otherwise you are absolutely correct, unless we are on permanent "amnesty day"

at human driven cars that cut them off. Then all will be well.

I saw that every time I see one.

Depending on where you live, between 10% and 25% of drivers are drunk.  There are no estimates on the number of drivers who are texting while moving at a mile every 50 seconds or so.  We do know that around 38,000 people are killed in traffic accidents each year.
I like to drive and I like to drive fast and with a stick shift,  I gave my son my very fast stick shift sports car and bought a very very safe self adjusting car that looks sporty but is safe even for a 75 year old driver very past his prime (which would keep him and others safe even if he fell asleep at the wheel.) . There comes a time when we have to recognize the danger of human frailties and accept the need for safety.
I would look forward to cars that always pays attention and always exercise good judgement.

Autonomous cars can and will continue to crash.

I've wondered how do you merge on to the highway in front of a fully loaded dump truck traveling at 80mph in the right lane, with an auto equipped with self braking technology. When the car in front of you also in the right lane traveling at less than 80mph.

Wouldn't the vehicle automatically brake in front of the dump truck  once it got "too" close to the car in front, instead of allowing you to accelerate freely into the left lane?

I'll take fatigued, drunk, drugged, and stupid drivers over autonomous ones any day.
