Linda. All the other guys are assholes and Charlie should have fought to get to her. Cut down a tree, wrestle an alligator, or pay the boatman! God lol. She should date the monger and be happy that guy dumped her. At least he can find a solution to a problem.

A little side note: the monger did use the girl's desire for love as a business transaction. Hehe. A guy who makes the girl always go out of her way to see him, but he never goes out of his way to get to her doesn't love her. If he has no desire to see a woman when it's inconvenient for him... it shouldn't last long in my book. It was a test for the guy. Don't have a boat? Girl is short on cash? Make some sacrifice and be a man. He shouldn't let his girl be in a situation where she has to sell her body to get to him if it's that important. Problem solved.

Done!

Rank five people according to their actions in a scenario in which a lady attempts to cross a river in order to be reunited with her boyfriend.

Charlie and Linda who are very much in love and devoted to one another, are separated by a river with no way of getting across to the other side. On Linda's side of the river, there is a boatman who is able to take her over to the other side of the river but refuses to do so unless she pays him $100, twice his normal fare. Linda has no money and has no other way to get back across the river. Another man, Steve, then tells Linda that he will giver her $100 if she sleeps with him. Linda agrees to do so and on receiving the $100, pays the boatman who takes her over to the other side of the river. She is reunited with Charlie and they are very happy together. However, Charlie's friend, Felix, finds out what happened and immediately tells Charlie. On learning the news, Charlie finds Linda and ends things with her, stating that he wants nothing more to do with her.

Your task is to rank these five people, according to how much you sympathize with their characters or identify with their actions.

Analysis:

Here is what each character in the story represents:

Boatman: Business
Charlie: Chastity
Felix: Friendship
Linda: Love
Steve: Sex

Your answer reveals how you rank business, chastity, friendship, love and sex, and therefore their importance in your life. People having similar ranking systems tend to be compatible - not surprisingly, since the above choices are an important indicator of character and values. People who give opposite or mutually random answers tend not to get along well.

Linda  - she did it out of love
Boatman - he is a business man trying to make money
Felix - he cared for his friend
Steve - he's a hobbyist by nature
Charles - he sat on his ass not doing shit
yet blames linda for doing everything she can so that they can be together. fuck tard

And he's named after a cartoon animal!

Charlie deserves to be ranked above him!

1) The boatman

2) Linda

3) Charlie

4) Steve

5) Felix

...another paradox.

How do you think each of the five characters would rank their sympathies?
Assuming that each would put his/her name at the top of the list, how do you think they would rank the actions of the others based on the actions each of them took?

...on some lame ass mid day talk show back in the 60's. Maybe Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin.

First it says that there is no way to get across the river, but then says there is a guy with a boat, so why did it say "no way"?

All the people seem like idiots and I have no sympathy for them or who ever came up with this scenario.

(OK, so I'm not having a very good day so far.)

I think it makes sense as a test, not the best yarn though, no prize for literature on that one.

The simplicity fooled me, because my mind went to Charon and Rio Lethe. Stygian images were cluttering my imagination while anticipating the punch line waiting on the banks on the other side of the test (I dutifully stopped reading when so instructed). So when the personality thing was revealed, it took me unawares, and as such I felt properly tested.

I wanna shout, "See Mom! I CAN think INSIDE the box!!!"

Anyway, it was fun. Lame or not. And I'd sort of buy what the results reveal. Maybe adding a few more value statements to the five characters like ethics, empathy, creativity, and so on.

Linda. All the other guys are assholes and Charlie should have fought to get to her. Cut down a tree, wrestle an alligator, or pay the boatman! God lol. She should date the monger and be happy that guy dumped her. At least he can find a solution to a problem.

...and the Boatman takes them across the river where Felix gets in a fight with Steve and Charlie grows a pair and... Aw, but I don't want to spoil the ending for you.

GaGambler816 reads

After being dumped by that sanctimonious fucktard Charlie, Linda decides she needs another hundred bucks, looks up Steve and then comes to the realization that Steve is ten times the man that Charlie ever was.

FWIW, I didn't "play the game" but except for Linda I didn't find any of the characters particularly sympathetic. I would rate them as Linda far and away  number one, and the others in a tie for last place.

She probably had to. Notice the guy didn't help her get back home?

GaGambler869 reads

No mention of Steve crossing the river either, or any mention of how just how the fuck that nosy little putz Felix found out about Steve and Linda in the first place. So maybe Felix made Linda the same deal as Steve for her to get back home, which would make him the "lowest of the low' as if he weren't already. lol

Ditto. Soon as I realized there was only one bitch in this tail (pun me), I made up my mind. All about my bitches, woof woof.

Sorry mongers but I would have to shank the hobbyist mid-coitus event though it's just supply and demand. Linda wasn't about that life, she'd be pissed about it.

Take his hundred and everything else of value, pay the boat guy who I would…yup you got it…murder halfway across the river. Throw him overboard. but not before retrieving my money and any other valuables because he wouldn't do it for love, so he's mostly dead inside anyway.

Once over I would break up with that lazy bum of a boyfriend, for being lazy and to make way for his best friend. Why else would he cunt block? It's obvious there's a real connection and a chance for same sex love to flourish. Great. It's progressive for a time with boat transportation only. I'd then continue the progress by using my blood money to open up a brothel and buy a handful of boats to keep people crossing that river for a good time.

At a quarter of the dead boat mans price…
Lemonade my ninja…lemonade.

so her a****** boyfriend is sitting across the river letting her try to figure out how to get over to him?
!!!???
and then when she attempts to troubleshoot he gets mad at her um excuse me?
that's her fault for falling in love with a total douchebag
if a guy really loves her and wants to see her but he shouldn't get mad at what she has to do to get across the river
!
whether she robs a bank with a mask on and a bullet proof vest
and a semi-automatic rifle
or she has to f*** 20 people
he is sitting there like an idiot making her try to get over to him because we are in love and want to be together
and then when she does the best you can to get across the river he gets mad at her how my supposed to feel bad at anyone
and yes the boatman once twice as much such is the way of the world when people find out you are an escort they charge you double this is the way of the world when people find out someones a Millionaire the charge them double when people make their own prices and there's not a listing of rates that's the way people are in this world
for example any time every anyone ever found out I was an escort or dancer
they would over charge me for example Boston cabs things like that people are just assholes the boatman was being an a****** because he knows she would go through it because she wants that boat ride that's the way people are in this world in a lot of business is not just boats
is the boat man wants to charge double he can charge double that's his prerogative people can do whatever they want and people can make up their own prices
and people are free to change their prices on a whim whenever they feel like it especially people like the boat man who knows this idiotic woman is going to pay him double
I live in a big city I live in Boston and you get used to this kind of stuff everybody's a hustler around Boston that's the way things are people decide to charge BB decide to charge double I can't go and complain about it but I can go and buy my own boat so I never have to call the boat guy! :-)
what she should have done is gotten a huge samurai sword and hold up the boat guy at knifepoint put a pillow case over his head and a ball gag in his mouth so nobody can hear scream and Steal the boat.
problem solved she gets to see the guy and she doesn't have to have sex with anyone.
.....
this whole scenario is just stupid and I don't feel bad for anyone
life isn't fair and that's the way it goes things aren't always fair people don't always charged with a should charge we all don't always get what we feel we should deserve in life
If a guy decides to ditch her because she had to pull a couple of strings to get a cross that river he's a d******* anyway and she doesn't need him
in fact is probably a guy further down the river that has a cigarette boats and she won't have to use her own money to get across to him because he has his own livery boat
I won't feel bad for her because she should settle for nothing but the best and down the river there's probably a BB D.
B.b.d. stands for bigger better deal.
Theres always a bigger better deal.
The guy makn her get across the river? Then dis owns ger,?
This is so typical asian culture riddle!
Asian culture is very abusive to women.
No wonder.
Here is the italian version.
there is a guy named v ito on one side of the river, he needs his victoria to get across to him.
He wont stand for it. He is outta money so is she.
He punches the boat livery in face. And tells him hand over keys. Or answer to rest his family.
He goes to grab Victoria.
Done.
now they get to run off into the sunset
life isn't fair and you can curl up in a ball and cry or if you want something you can just demand it and go take it.
or like the Chinese version you can curl up in a ball and decide which one to feel bad for?
that riddle totally is ridiculous and it sucks'
it's kind of like well nobody really wins the whole story stinks nobody had any balls nobody made anything happen everybody just crawled up and said oh well I lose
its not a very ballsy riddle and basically all the characters in it are pushovers an idiots

My ranking:

Charlie: Chastity
Felix: Friendship
Linda: Love
Steve: Sex
Boatman: Business

Apparently I rank chastity highest?! Come on meow. That's just silly.

It's a silly but fun test.  In a way,  it does have some truth to it.

Why could Charlie not jump in the river and swim to Linda? If she was willing to fk another guy to be with him and ONLY with him, I can't really fault her for that as wacked out as it may be. Men and women do dumb shit for each other all the time, and have it blow up in their face years later when they find out what a scumbag the SO turns out to be. At least Charlie found out Linda was a needy bitch before too late, because any woman willing to go through all that for some dude is just that... needy.

I would have fked Felix, stole the boat to sail off to Italy, and sent Charlie the video tape whilst telling him to get fked and learn to swim. :)

She's a bitch and I'm an asshole, why wouldn't we get along?

The Boatman is just trying to make a living.  Supply and demand.
Steve's just trying to get laid.
Linda coulda swam the river or earned the cash in some other way. She wasn't in a rush was she?
Charlie's a lazy fuck who just couldn't give a damn about Linda or else he woulda got off his fat ass and earned some dough to take the boat to meet HER!
Felix is just a goddamn snitch who needs a beating.

If I was  Charlie and  too dim to swim .

 1. There is no such thing as NO WAY when two people are in love .

I would find a log and paddle across ,  upstream , out of everyone's view .
I would sneak behind the boatman ,  hit him in the head with a log as hard as I could , as just
punishment  for doubling his normal rate in time of need .

I would commandeer his boat and tell Linda , Steve and Felix to jump aboard .

When we were half way across I would ask Linda to remove her thong .
I would throw Felix's clothes in the river , put Linda's  thong on Felix and command horny Steve to have his way with Felix the snitch .

When we reached the other side I would take the hundred bucks he offered my GF for sex ,
and leave him with  Felix to do whatever floats their boat ,  while my true love and me go on a cruise .

If I couldn't be the guy saving Linda , my take , Charlie , Felix , Steve and Boatman  deserve each other  , Linda should move on and make her choices when not under desperate pressure .

Linda   -   Willing to give her  all for love
                                 Steve  -   Desperate Loser
Charlie -   Satisfied with Total Failure ,  tied with  Felix the Snitch
Boatman - Likely  Slave trader in his past or potential kidnapper , deserves nothing

I followed instructions writing all my answers  before reading further.
After reading the analysis I agree , I don't have desperate loser friends . In other words , I don't fraternize with guys who would offer a woman not in the business dollars for sex , aka pimps  .
 I don't  associate with snitches .
 I don't  associate with corrupt businessman .

I have always  loved women willing to give me  her all . :-D

The boatman is just doing his job. Unless Charlie is in danger of dying and only can be saved by the kiss of Linda's sweet lips, he has no moral obligation to give her a free ride.

Charlie should swim to HER. Or pay to take a boat to HER. WTF Charlie??

Linda is an idiot for trying to cross a river to see a guy who obviously can't be bothered to go to equal lengths to see her. WTF Linda??

Steve is a predator. And he's cheap. $100? WTF Steve??

Felix is a cad and a drama queen. He either wanted attention from Steve, or has always secretly wanted to fuck Linda. Wonder how that worked out for him?

Linda should have fucked Steve AND Felix...then spent the $200 on a new dress, and scored herself a REAL man  :-D

Clearly taking advantage of Linda. If he was charging his normal fee of $50 then Linda would only of had to do a blow & go. Charlie probably would have been cool with that.

The goddamn BOATMAN!

I know, I had him at the top of my list, too.
I used to drive cab, so I guess I emphasize with the "making a living" thing.

From reading the posts, who placed him highly, phrases like, "Doing his job," "Making a living," etc. started to remind me of the Nuremberg Trials. Granted, this was not a matter of life and death, but doing wrong because it's part of one's job doesn't cut it. He doubled his price, a sympathetic act would be to halve it. Or, what the hell, do it for free.

Felix is a snitch, always will be at the bottom. No wrong was righted by his wagging his tongue.
So... Now, here the personality test doesn't apply because I've been studying the answers knowing what they reveal... but here is my revised ranking:

Linda: She's the protagonist, she has the goal to be achieved, SHE wants to cross the river.
Steve took advantage of an opportunity for gratification.
Charlie is neck and neck with Steve because although not explicitly stated, he doesn't know what's going on across the river. Since the story doesn't assert that he knows, we ought assume he doesn't know about the boatman. He is ignorant-- a flaw that's seldom forgiven, but in this case, meh... So that puts Steve ahead by a nose. Sorry Charlie.
Fourth is the Boatman who simply does as finances bid him to do. Nothing heroic. A common person with unremarkable traits.
Then the snitch, who caused harm and serves no good purpose. Felix should learn when to keep his mouth shut.
