I'm not sure anyone can save a guy STUPID enough to wire $6750 to a pimp/manager who he knows is in the Philippines. That, my friend, is kindergarten-level stupid. Very different from a guy who sends a $500 deposit to a reviewed provider.

I have to agree that some people are beyond saving. Have you ever seen a rip off provider on TER who has literally a dozen bad reviews? You can give the first guy a pass for a TOFTT, but what about the guy still willing to see her after more than ten rip off reviews? How is anyone dumb enough to keep trying their luck with a PROVEN rip off hooker? Hard to imagine, but it happens all the time.

i have done some stupid things in my life .. but heck wiring $5K to someone you have never met that certainly is an extreme .. but then again what about those people who wired their life savings to lotteries in Nigeria.
i got pissed when i got ripped off for $500 to 600 each time over the years from several vegas girl i actually knew ! .. and thats happened a few times but only 1% of the girls i have met have done that. and at $500 ish a few times i just considered that lesson learned.

Sonny's post was not about the naivete of the reddit poster or the extent of the error and gullibility, but that TER can add value to mongers (particularly the newbie and more naturally trusting ones) helping them avoid such poor decision-making. Note, he's not making any universal claim, merely noting the potential -- hence his choice of "could have" instead of "would have" in the title.
Of course, maybe some really are saying that TER and it's community is hopelessly fucked up and in no way ever could a better outcome have been achieve if the guy had been using TER and asking for advice.
There is no “saving” people like that. The best you can hope for is they learned from their idiocy and do t do the same thing again. Undoubtedly they will make other stupid mistakes though.

I don't know about helping the guy, from what I've seen here, there was a lot of belief that just laughing at such people will cause him to realize their mistake. Like I've said I don't buy into it. One might assume he has zero knowledge of TER, the reviews or the discussion board where people could have given him some advice should he have asked.
So the general argument many here seem to want to put out is the false narrative that this is not his first time. That he was very naive -- true. And the regardless of the naivety he should have had some other life experiences that would have prepared him to consider malicious intent by the "manager". All leading to the conclusion that had he been on TER he never would have listened to any advice and is probably out there right now sending money to some other scammer because he it too stupid to learn. Or perhaps some are saying no one here would have tried to help had he asked anything but would have just ridiculed him.

I often wonder how often true newbies to the game join ter. Ie, ones that never have done p2p and have never really researched it. I imagine many such newbies operate off impulses and may only join hobby sites or ask advice after they have been burned.
TER discussion board is like a local dive bar in a middle of a non-tourist neighborhood. Mostly same ol names here, and it can create an intimidating atmosphere. Someone on reddit can create a throwaway and ask a question without being questioned about reviews and so on. I'm not saying ter is bad, don't get me wrong, all I'm saying it's probably not the first place someone who has little idea of what he's doing will go to.

For the record Perfect Storm is the current host of the Newbie Board and I am a former moderator of that same board, we each have THOUSANDS of posts helping Newbies, both on the newbie and every other board on TER, What the fuck have you really done here that compares to either of us? When you have helped out even a tenth as much as either of us have, THEN you can feel free to run your mouth on this subject. I've said this to you before and I'll say it again, if you REALLY want to help, put some time in on the newbie board like PS and I have.

I'm glad you finally came around to seeing me as I am. I've never been against mongers (or people in general) but my position has always been we're ultimately responsible for our own choices and success here depends more on "fixing ourselves" rather than trying to directly change/fix external world (e.g., agency behavior). Helping someone make better decisions, have a better decision-making process, is much more useful to helping others.
That said, however, I really don't have a big concern about characterizing the choice in the story as comically stupid (perhaps even with a modifier of monumentally preceding it).
