I'm assuming it's because Provider, Courtesan, Escort or even Call Girl sounds "nicer" than prostitute, whore or hooker.

Of course, "Customer" sounds better than john or whore monger does too....

Also many ladies use the term Courtesan. Which is old as dirt.
Other terms could be considered offensive I guess.
I never heard of it either. I like it though.
One thing I do know.

Wrong.

Provider is called provider because she takes your cash and gives you a few moments of pleasure.

Provider does not give you lasting joy.  She does not give you love or children.  Something only wife or mistress can give.  

Its just a service.

The more the provider fakes...orgasms, smiles, kisses, how much she is enjoying it, the more client tips her.  

Its all just a show, a web of honey trap to milk the client.  And so you should enjoy the few minutes while they lasts and not ask too many questions on what, where, why and all the works...

I actually think that even provider is degrading....Provider of what?  I prefer companion. For any one charging upwards of $500 and my left testicle, I have reserved courtesan.

certain terminology goes in and out, and comes back in again, that is just the nature of language. however the word "provider" is a pretty good one...after all, we do "provide" a particular service to the men who see us. at the same time it remains a broad enough term to apply accurately to most of us. personally, being a logician i like terms to be as specific as possible. there are difference between hookers, call girls, massage girls, escorts, courtesans, etc. they refer to very different niches and types of intimate service. personally i am some weird combination of sexual surrogate and hired submissive...any man seeing me and expecting to receive the services of your typical escort or "provider" would be very very disappointed.

bottom line...there is a place for us all, we just have to find it. and i quite like the fact that terminology is a bit more diverse these days so that compatible folks can find each other a bit more easily.

The word is prostitute.  It's the dictionary definition for everybody selling sex.  More importantly it's the legal definition.  It is really neutral, except the job is considered by society to be at or near the bottom.  It's NOT the name it's the JOB.  So instead of admitting what or who they are, a prostitute, an old profession with a long and interesting history, they prefer denial.  

Can you blame them for not wanting to be looked down upon and stigmatized, just for choosing a job where they do very little work for a lot of money.  They will immediately scream how much work and money they put into it.  NO OTHER work could THEY could find, at least not without putting a lot of work into finding it, would pay them so much with such little work, by far.  That is where half of the social resentment comes from and I wonder how many of them feel that way themselves.  I'm certain many.

The other part, goes back to religion and disturbing the social order.  Which has changed significantly on its own, that eventually will loosen up in time that part of the cause of the negative attitude should change to some degree.  

So they change the name to something that makes them feel happier about themselves.  In time that name will take on the stigma and it will be abandoned and another found.

Garbage men are sanirary engineers.

Secretaries are administrative assistants.

Even prisoners turned into inmates at some point.

where the heck did the term "whoremonger" come from anyway? The definition of monger:

trader: someone who purchases and maintains an inventory of goods to be sold.
An example is a "fishmonger."
In the case of "whoremonger," I would think that means someone who sells whores, (i.e. pimp) not someone who buys them. I aint no pimp, therefore I'm no whoremonger.

How did that word come to mean that? Since "monger" is a seller, how did "whoremonger" come to mean a buyer? I think definition 2 makes more sense, and I still will not call myself a whoremonger.

And I'm sure I can find a definition somewhere for "provider" that says "prostitute." Just too lazy to look right now. However the main definition of "a person or thing who provides something does make a lot of sense."
