There are many resources available for avoiding sexually transmitted diseases. I wonder if anyone has suggestions for avoiding more common variety infections like colds and the flu. This is of course relevant for both providers and clients. I hate the loss of time from work and recreation that is caused by these illnesses, but so too must providers, and who can blame them/you? I suppose I could walk out if she/you are actively coughing and sneezing. And providers may want to do the same with coughing, sneezing clients. But there are not always such symptoms. Is there anything useful we can do aside from avoiding real kissing? Something to do or take before or after the encounter to reduce the chances of catching a cold? Would gargling with mouthwash help, for example?
I hope you don't get too heavily flamed for it. 1) Don't come to this or any board for medical advice. Half of what you'll get back is uninformed hearsay. 2) Get a flu shot. 3) For colds, wash your hands after any contact with someone who may be infected, or use anti-bacterial soap. Rhino-viruses are also transmitted by touching an infected finger to your nose or eyes so don't do that until after you've washed up. 4) If you know you're ill, don't pass it along. If you're a client this means don't see a provider. It's not that complicated.
Facts are people are rude, and do not think of the outcome they only think of their selves, and their wants, or needs at the time. I got sick from a client, and after visiting my Dr., paying for meds, with having no health insurance the $ I made on the session was gone, so no I prefer respectful individuals who care about my personal well being.
This goes both ways I am sure with providers who have bills to pay providing on their menstrual cycle, etc...

I was sick over the Holiday's, and received a deposit for an appointment, but I was honest & told the kind man the truth I was ill. He waited until I was well & respected the fact that I did not want to infect him. Money is not everything...
e.g. If you've pre-booked and come down under the weather - please contact the lady/agency and tell them you are sick and need to reschedule. I'm sure they will be most thankful. Colds/Flu just like in the civilian world means sick days = lost business = lost money! I think every provider will appreciate your honesty. Just try to give her enough notice.
Likewise, if you have any cold sores, or worse. DO NOT see anyone until you are healthy. There is too much at stake in this industry. I for one don't want to be the one to see a lady if she just finished a DFK with you and you had the flu or worse!

Or just follow what everyone else has said. Good hand-washing before you eat is a great way to keep from getting sick. You should wash with warm water and soap for the length of time it takes you to sing "twinkle twinkle little star". The quick wash most people do has very little affect on germ killing.
Good idea to wash hands several times during the day - so many things we touch have germs on them. Once you touch your eyes, nose, mouth with your hands it it easy to get sick. Frequent hand-washing is the best policy. FYI - in hospitals and doctors's offices they now have hand sanitizer stations in every room. It may also be good to keep a hand sanitizer in your handbag (lady) or car (gentleman). Personally, I keep listerine in my car which I use vigorously before AND after every date.
One of the thing I do to help prevent passing colds around, is keep a bottle of achole very handy everywhere in my home. Washing hands with it between every session and wipe down my massage table and head rest with alchol between every session. And always have fresh sheet and towls for every session. Like other if I'm under the weather I will not take appointment as a attempt to not pass them around as well. Most Flu and cold prevention is Just Common Sense

Passing a cold / flu around does not heklp anyone. I've had a bad cold over a month... just finished Antibiotics. I went to a FBSM date today but and not sure enough that I'm over it to go to a GFE date. I'd feel horrible if I gave it to a lovely lady.
