I think that reading erotica can be more stimulating. I guess it would depend on how good the writer is and what they are describing. Erotica about straight missionary sex between two 90 year olds (no offense to any TER members who may be 90) described in great detail is no where near as exciting as a well written story about a hot 20 year old couple having sex in a public place.
I've dabbled in both, although I have read far more erotica than I have ever looked at pr0n.
The major thing for me is the woman's emotion or state of mind during an encounter. There are very, very few videos which capture a true expression of passion/lust/ecstasy - most are bored or almost angry-looking.
Erotica, however, delivers a really good message when written well - the corded muscles on a lady's neck when they reach the height of passion, the glow of passion filling a woman's face, the half-lidded eyes and slackness of a woman's lips as they reach ecstasy.
That's what gets me going, but then again, I've been told I'm very different than most men in this regard.
In the "broader public", I have noticed an alarming trend that most prefer the visuals rather than the written word, as evidenced by the lack of erotica in comparison to videos out there.
If you want a broader public, pr0n is probably the better avenue. If you want the more intelligent public, then I suggest going with erotica. The number of people able to paint a picture in their mind using words alone is less and less each year.

Oh, Veronica, how sweet you are! Like many others, I like them both, just as I like more than one position, etc. Visual porn, depending on quality, is like a cheeseburger, very satisfying when you're REALLY hungry and can't wait for a properly cooked steak (or some similar simile). Quality erotica has both the subtlety of language and the freedom of one's imagination. It just takes a little longer to appreciate - but its impact can be so much greater.

...but if i had to choose one over the other, it would likely be written erotica simply because there are no limits to the content. the sort of erotica i find arousing tends to be on the hardcore end...nonconsent, violence, blood, tears, real emotional anguish, etc. the sort of thing that is very difficult to find in legal visual porn. so i often browse through the alt sex story text repository site and there i can read and be aroused by stories of rape, incest, snuff, etc...and create my own images in my mind to go along with it, and all guilt free.
I like the visual aesthetics of the visual porn, but the greater sexual heat is developed in reading Erotica. I think for myself I'm more likely to take care of my own needs with visual porn, while reading Erotic stories or material is more likely to motivate me to be with a woman.
