I like for both ladies and gentlemen to be trimmed but not totally bald. Although on women I don't mind the completely bald look but I think some hair is nice just not 70's porn style bush.

And my unruly chest hair gets in the way of the attention I like given to my nipples unless it is somewhat trimmed.  
 

being very clean is key but a little trimming is fine. Not a requirement for me to be clean shaven below the belt.  
I really can't stand when dudes shave their bodies and then it iritates my skin.  Face or stomach hair is so much better than itchy stubble. Personally I like the rugged, hairy bod, 5 O'clock shadow and all.

IMHO, it is pointless to ask the question and equally pointless to try to answer it too exactly. There are too many factors involved to get a single answer.  

My takeaway from what I've read, heard, experienced, etc... is that extremes of body hair (hairy or hairless) would be more likely be a turnoff, and that moderation (trimmed and well groomed) is going to be more attractive to more women more of the time, with younger women preferring less hair and more mature women being more accepting of more body hair.  

Granted, exceptions will certainly exist and sometimes a woman might simply want to be with a great guy regardless of body hair - maybe he makes her laugh, feel desired and sexy and is a great kisser, and those are more important to her?

The providers I see most often, including my atf, all like the important bits shaved and smooth (and clean of course), with a landing patch. So that's what I do. They seem to appreciate it.    I don't have thick body hair so that's not an issue.

After my informal poll last month I kept the goatee bushy and the bush trimmed close to the skin.
