I have been to Cartegena, Colombia and felt pretty much as you did. However in Rio the fear factor was at about 50% the first
day or two and went steadily down to 0%. After about 3 or four days I felt very comfortable there.

Yeah, it was my second trip to Colombia in the past 2 years and it wasn't LE I was afraid of, it was being kidnapped! The State Department web site said don't even get into a cab if you don't know the driver and some other web BB's had stuff about knockout drugs some of the girls would use. I tried a trick a friend of mine suggested - get a second wallet and fill it with all the unsolicited, unactivated credit cards I get in the mail, plus a nominal amt of cash and leave it sort of hidden where it can be found by a thief. Who would think to look for a 2nd wallet!

Speaking of South American fun, visited Buenos Aires 5 years ago and was taken to a place in the Recolleta district called "Play Womenfor You." Inside was a nightclub full of penthouse pet-quality girls dancing and chatting with guys. Rio is fine. Cambodia is more problematical. Sex is cheaper pretty much everywhere else the world over. Next time in Rio you can go to a terma for beauty (Centaurus, known locally as "the Big 'C'") or for nasty (4x4, downtown-SC atmosphere, like a big toga party).

Not crazy about Help. Dangerous neighborhood after dark, but convenient if it's 4am and you still haven't scored yet.

Centaurs is a rip off. I don't recommend anyone go there. As for Help, you get what you pay for, I guess. They now have cops
posted on the corner until about 2 AM or so.
