I know the end of this chapter is drawing near.  My question is...

Do I tell people?  Do I state this will be my last tour to the area, or is better to just fade away?

Which would you prefer and why please.

Ive only been back a year and a half, but Im already thinking that when I do decide to retire, Im gonna make a big deal out of it!  Why not?  Say goodbye to old friends, maybe make another new one or two...as much fun as this profession is, we work hard, so you might as well go out with a bang!  If you were working for Corporate America, there would be some sort of Farewell for you, what makes this business any different?!

A few providers I've known have retired over the years and I regretted not getting to see them one more time to do it up in a blaze of glory, so to speak.

The ones who did tell me got to have a special time of it.

announce it; do overnights with your favorite ATFs; set a retirement date; hold a party.  And then stop.  

It's not what we want.  It's what works for you.  If it's a real retirement, then do things that commemorate the occasion and make it memorable.  This is a life passage.  Don't let it slip by unnoticed.

I have been wittness to so many comebacks, that I am a little skeptical.

They will feel better knowing that you chose to hang up the shooting irons. If I were a regular of you, I would be concerned if you just vanished and I did not know that you did so by choice.

I have to agree. I've seen too many turn into middle-aged phone girl's. How many providers do you see that claim to be going to school and plan on qitting when they are done yet year's later they are still working?

Seriously, mention it, I cant stress it enough.

One reason is I know a provider who announced it and her business increased and the 2nd reason is that any time a product "you" is limited and their is a sense of urgency involved with the purchase ..... it tends to increase sales.

So, go for it darling and have a great time.

Last year I had one of my favorite regulars to retire.  She posted her retirement on her site a month in advance.  This allowed me to plan a fabulous farewell date with her that still makes me smile when I recall how great our friendship was and still is.

I do agree that it is probably better to say something before just disappearing.  I took a sabbatical from the profession a couple of years ago and made the mistake of not announcing it.  I'm who likes my privacy, and I truly didn't want to explain, or feel the need to explain, my reasons.  Unfortunately, the rumors abounded on the board as to why and finally a few providers that I know called me just to make sure I was okay because of the rumors.  I do agree, though, that every time I see an announcement that someone is retiring, all I think is "Yeah....see you in six months."  So many girls announce retirement, things don't work out the way they planned, and they are right back.  Maybe announcing a 'sabbatical of undetermined length' would be a better way to bow out?

The retirement rate of providers historically isn't that good. The vast majority that publicly  announce retirement wind up back in the business (some sooner than others).  I'd imagine the realities of earning a living in the real world (ie..finishing school, starting at the bottom, paying taxes on all your earnings, earning far less in a week than you do working 1 day as a provider, etc..) set in and they realize it's a far cry from guys beating down your door with money in their hands!

While letting guys know that you might not be touring to their city any longer isn't a bad idea, you may want to think twice about a retirement announcement.

Yes, you should let your regulars know.  I have seen two ladies in the past 8 months during their last month in the area (they moved but didn't retire) and another lady is leaving in a few months (she is retiring).  I sometimes think about the last time with each lady with a smile on my face.
