Long voice mail messages drive me nuts...I am "Get to the point!!!!" after about 15 seconds. Sometimes will delete and call the number back without listening to the whole message. Obviously providers may not feel comfortable with this, but if their mailboxes are full from droners, I feel their pain.
among other reasons why I like Email as the intial contact method.Now,don't get me wrong there are some that go on and on in an email but thankfully I do not get that too often.Outside this business I do have afriend that leaves long-winded messages so long the voicemail cuts off and she calls back to continue her message.Sheesh,I am like you get to the point with a brief message and go on about your business.
If the email is long, you can scan it; with VM you have only two choices - listen or dump (well, you can speed it up, but scanning an email is still better and faster).
Yes, long voicemails bug me, but a number of younger generation friends and family have told me that VM, and calling people, are inherently rude - always text first, only call if you really need a real time discussion, which is rarely the case. And I get that now, I do, plus they trained me by ignoring calls and VM, but replying immediately to text.
BTW, with VM and text, we all do know that the odds of anything past the first two lines actually being read is way less than 50%, right? It probably tracks pretty closely to how many people go past the first page of search results. And don't give me that short attention span, no one can focus, the world is going to hell crap, please. It is what it is, there are pros and cons, live with it.
Voice mail is perhaps the bane of my existence. I basically get three types of voicemail -- people wanting to sell me stuff, people who buy stuff from me and want some sort of help and people whose messages I have deleted from sheer aggravation without ever figuring out what they want.
Between cell phones, home phones and work phones I easily and quite literally get too many messages to return all those calls and I have to do triage. Triage starts when I can't figure out what someone wants within 30 seconds. Then I delete the sales calls from salespeople who are selling stuff I don't need/want. The worst, because I'm a professional in a bunch of different fields, is those people calling to try to renew free subscriptions to magazines I do not want and never knew existed. They say "Oh, I just have three questions." The first question is your name and address. The second is print or digital. The third is "Do you specify, recommend or approve the purchase of ..." and THEN they have what must be 250 items. When it comes to that ... I just say "No, I don't want the subscription, I don't have time for your questions."
It is VERY common for me to just see that someone has called, and call them back rather than listen to their message if I know who they are. Especially people who leave very long messages.
perhaps because my phone number is not something given out to all and sundry, generally those who call me are those i know and like; therefore, i appreciate hearing from them, and i appreciate more than a handful of words blurting out something cold and impersonal.
in this way i know i am extremely old-fashioned...i can't stand our modern age with its trend against any sort of open, intimate and personal communication. we are all supposed to operate in a "get it done right now, what do you want, spit it out, moving on!" mode that i find absolutely deplorable. for this reason i loathe cell phones, and have never and will never send a text message. i'm sorry but if you can't be bothered with taking two minutes to send a message to, or listen to a message from, a human being in your own personal life, then you my friend are contributing to the death of humanity.
Could not agree with you more on this. I hate long voice mails, long emails, long phone conversations, you name it. I am a huge believer in the beauty of brevity. If you can't explain something -- or tell me what you want -- in 3 to 4 sentences, then you don't understand it yourself.
