One of the few things MTV ever did that was worth a damn.

Now, as I have been queried on this and I don't want my position to be misunderstood on Mikey, I'll state it clearly in one spot.

I don't know him personally, but we have communicated a lot in the background and I know OF him by a LOT of people who HAVE met him personally -- both men and women. It is clear to me that Mike is a good man, a good hobbyist and a fundamentally decent person from these inputs. I consider myself a good judge of character, and I have a lot of faith in the word of the women who vouch for him.

I understand how he can be misunderstood. He is exuberant, full of life, and in some respects a little "devil-may-care." A lot of people here are surly and cynical. They don't grasp exuberance. They don't grasp his strong statements, his fierce loyalty, and stuff like that.  

He has also admitted openly on this board that he partakes more than would be wise of intoxicants, and that this may affect his judgment. Just from a human perspective, if he is doing something that he knows or believes is harmful to himself, I believe he should do what he can to get it resolved. He has one life to live, he is a good man, and resolving those matters can help him attain his dreams.

NOW -- it is clear that he has made some postings that I think reasonable people who don't know Mike could reasonably see as threats of physical violence.

People who know much about Mike also know better than to see these as real threats. They are more like youthful joshing. Imagine a couple of guys giving each other shit. "Oh yeah? Well stfu or I'm gonna ram this truck up your ass!" It's not a threat. It is playful joshing. If you were there in person to see the facial expressions and body language, it would be utterly innocuous and even fun.

Of course, over the Internet in black and white, the body language and facial expressions are missing. People experience a GREAT deal of miscommunication over the Internet, hurt feelings and mis-perceptions because we don't realize as humans how much we rely on these somatic cues to give language its true meaning.

Mikey types like he talks.

Hey -- people misinterpret me and what I "must" be like from my typing all the time. Some people think I must be some snooty academic and all kinds of crap. No. I'm the opposite of Mike -- I do NOT type the way I speak in most cases.

I like Mike and I want him around. I think he adds a lot. I think his ability to hang around would be greatly enhanced if he paused and reflected not just on what he was trying to say -- but on how others would interpret it.

This is a fine line. I consider Mike an un-met friend. As such, I don't want to hurt his feelings and alienate him. But at the same time, I think he should use some sense and understand that 99% of people are not going to see his statements about choking people as utterly benign the way I see them. Hey, in PERSON, people would not take offense. But over the Internet where people can't see the grin? Most people would see that as threatening.

In other words, my criticism aimed at Mikey in this regard is, like Mike, well-intended.

Or let me put this in Mikey-speak directly aimed at Mike:

Mike, What the Fuck? What kind of bogus shit is this where you are threatening to fucking choke people? Some folks don't like that shit and they are gonna complain about the motherfucker who does it. Don't go running around typing shit like that. Folks won't get it. They'll think its fucking real! And while I'm at it, a little hair of the fucking dog is alright sometimes; but it hurts your judgment. Then people get pissed and upset. Folks are oversensitive as hell anyway.

You know mike, as an aside, people's oversensitivity in some realms is laughable. People who came to this continent hundreds of years ago and endured starvation, cold, plagues and worse would be laughing their fucking asses off at what utter god damned pussies their descendants have become where we have nothing better to do with our time than be scared of some guy's typing 1000 miles away.

Either way, I want your ass around. But there's nothing *I* can do to keep it around. Only YOU can keep it around; and I'm gonna be PISSED if you don't figure out how to make that shit happen.
