Just bought a copy of "The Male Brain," by Louann Brizendine, M.D. and author of "The Female Brain," which I read after both my daughter and LG recommended it. It was very informative, and the new book, "a breakthrough understanding of how men and boys think," looks even better, just from some of the chapter heads: "The Mating Brain: Love & Lust," "The Brain Below the Belt," "Manhood: The Emotional Lives of Men," and so on. I've not seen any reviews yet -- LG and others, have you read it? Anything that brushes away even a tiny bit of the fog surrounding sexuality in this country is extremely worth while, IMO.
I have not read either of these works, but whether they would infuriate a social constructionist depends entirely on whether Brizendine is championing the "evolutionary/genetic root cause" argument, or more simply stating the behaviors and associated brain related research. Researchers tend to agree that the brain grows and develops based on experiences (ie-learning/enculturation/etc). How much the brain is dependent upon these outside social experiences for its unique development, and how much is purely genetic is an issue that is still up for debate, however. Unfortunately, until brain-related research extends its studies to a more global scale, I'm afraid this matter will never truly be settled.
I have read a number of works in this genre; and am convinced that a combination of genetics and prenatal hormone levels have a substantial effect on the development of the brain. Effects that can be imaged, measured and predicted.
Likewise, it is indisputable that environment ALSO has an effect on the developing brain and resultant behaviors; as numerous studies have demonstrated.
The error lies in thinking that either a biological determinist or social constructivist view is the whole answer. NEITHER, in and of itself, is correct. BOTH -- when put together -- are correct.
