Dave had felt guilty all day long. No matter how much he tried to forget about it, he couldn't. The guilt and sense of betrayal were overwhelming. But every once in awhile he'd hear that soothing voice in his head, trying to reassure him: "Dave, don't worry about it. You weren't the first doctor to sleep with one of your patients and you won't be the last. And you're single. Let it go!".
But, invariably, the other voice would bring him back to reality: "Dave. You're a vet..."
I was in a courtroom (as a spectator) waiting for a matter that I was interested in to come up. Before that matter the judge had another case in which he was to pass sentence.
The lawyer got up and pleaded for a light sentence for his client. The argument went something as follows. "My client was convicted of statutory rape. Although the girl was under eighteen at the time she has now turned eighteen and has reached the age of consent. I request that you take that into consideration in passing sentence."
The judge looked the lawyer in the eye and said, "But she is still his sister."
