Hence the wise to share but just sharing the bit about the metadata location tags in the selfies might make people feel safe if they've disabled that in their camera or turn of GPS location (that just make you location a bit fuzzier from a tracking perspective) on phones.
Tablets? got the same issues there, as you will with the smart watches (ever see the bit from Apple about having their watch and getting a greeting by name posted to some LED display in the lobby as you walked into the Conference center?). Then there's all the "free" apps, and even many for pay apps. Moreover, your telco can turn on a number of things, including location, without needing to physically touch the phone and law enforcement can make such a request (emergency locator service).
Laptop -- connect to a WiFi service somewhere. You're location is potentially known -- you bought the laptop with a CC, right. Maybe online and had it shipped? The WiFi network card as a unique number that the government has records on. That can be pulled from any communications going to your laptop unless you have very well installed VPN.
If you're not thinking about all of that then don't think turning off your location tags in you phone's camera is more than a feel-good move in most cases.
Now, by all means, turn the crap off --- I do as well if I don't need it on for something specifically requiring it. But if someone has a real interest in finding you or knowing if you were in some area and are willing to spend the resources and $ to find/place you there turning off your location and camera location tags is not going to stop it.
The good news is that all that is way too much trouble for who most of us are and for what most of us are doing.
