I never have understood this concept of posting a message using an alias. Last time I checked, our TER handle is used to protect our true identity. What then is the need to post under a different handle? I wouldn’t reveal to any provider who I meet what my TER handle is. (nor have I ever been asked) Unless you have revealed your handle to a provider or fellow hobbyist and now want to post something controversial on the board, what is the need for an alias???? Am I missing another purpose?

a provider could guess your identity from details in a review... so the alias covers that possibilty.

and be even more anonymous than normal.

Guys who are active in the hobby community see other hobbyists at Meet and Greets and they see the ladies on the board there too.  

Occasionally they have things they want to share or discuss on the boards that may anger or contradict a lady they want to see and the alias allows them to post that statement without the lady knowing it is them.

Also some of us use our TER handle in the verification process.  Our White List referrals and reviews give ladies an idea of who we are and what we like.  It can also show them other ladies we have seen that will work as references to see them.  

Having an alias allows us to post "devil's advocate" type posts without negative backlash for ladies or guys we know.

These are just a few reasons for aliases.  Then there is also humor.  I have seen some very funny aliases and some aliases that were not that funny until you read the post they accompanied.

Its important to keep the babes guessing.  Cheating isn't just for married couples anymore.  I use this alias like a lone ranger mask or hornrim glasses on superman.  They can NEVER figure it out.  *insert maniacal laugh*  Just like Professor Chaos or the Spanish Inquisition - no one suspects!

Some providers have a need, at times, to seperate theselves (*or a comment*) from their "known" identity...... thus the use of an alias

I'll use one to answer a question where my tale involves a provider I've reviewed.  For example, someone asks if you've met a provider's family.  I don't think the answer needs to include which provider, and details about her family.  If you looked at my reviews, you MAY be able to figure it out.  I can risk outing personal details of some woman's life, not answer, or use an alias.  I feel comfortable with the last 2, but not the first.

but could uncover details about another person's life, that if examined by less than altruistic eyes, could do irrepairable damage to the life of another.

Recently - I BC'ed someone of some of my plans... and then parts of those plans appeared on one of the boards.  Eventhough, it would be impossible to discern my identity through that alone, pieced together with other bits and bites of info, could be used to determine who I am.... in short, if you are gonna give out anything - give only a protected name, and even then...

I use it because when I first joined I didn't have the foresight to think I might actually get a VIP membership and post on the MB. I should have made my member id this instead so I use it on the board.

A handle can piss off people who may go after
the provider's that the handle has reviewed.

And by "go after", I mean anything - from avoid
to harrass to harm.

If you're going to use an alias, try to keep from being too obvious...

Among the many reasons for the use of an alias I used an alias a few threads down because the post I wrote was, well, pretty darned explicit. I simply didn't feel comfortable allowing it to be connected with my real name. I thought that some might have viewed my post as an attempt at 'drumming up business', and thought others might hold the fact that I started on CL against me. Despite that though, I just thought my wonderful first experience as a provider was just too juicy not to share. Hence, I used an alias.

A few months ago, a guy wrote a post in which he confessed to contacting a provider's family after becoming emotionally entangled with her. He was slammed like a basketball for his foolishness, but in his case he did NOT use an alias and should have. With only one review to his credit, there was absolutely no doubt who the provider in the situation was. His bumbling attempts at getting advice wound up having the effect of hurting this woman yet again after he outed her to her family - or at least her step father.

So there are two reasons for using an alias.

Thank you for the input; and the reasoning you have all provided makes perfect sense. I guess from my perspective over the past 4 years as a hobbyist, I have never had the need to post a message under any other handle.
