I actually think there are a lot of people on this board that if it weren't for their sexual drives are pretty good people. So I actually would like an honest opinion. We have a 5 YO dog that the Vet says $7K should pretty much fix things. In this economy I'm thinking WTF? There is a posabilty that they can give the dog  meds and things may turn around but if not....... My SO will be devastated. I'm thinking we can replace the dog (or not) for a lot less and roll the dice. I think most guys would agree with me but I am curious about the ladies thoughts as well. If this isn't a good question for this site I apologize.

I love my little doggie to death but she is a dog and when that time comes for her, it'll just be her time.  I would not spend 7K to save my dog's life.  I would spend anything to save a child or parent, but not my dog.

Mine has a "luxating patella" according to the vet..  Which is a fancy word for a bad knee.  She said its about 3 or 4K to do surgery.  Im sorry, but my doggie will just have to put up with it, and I give her pain meds when she limps but thats the end of that.

If the same guys spending 20k a year on ass would let their family pet die, that says a lot about their character. I would sell every Louis Vuitton Purse I had to save a pet if they had a lot of life ahead of them...my Benz too in fact. I would feel like a complete piece of shit knowing I am out there buying up luxury items making over 600 a date, and letting my pet die to save a buck..that is just me though.

If it were a situation where the pet was only going to live in agony, I would put them to sleep. I am a huge cat lover though. I would have taken a bullet for my cat Jezebel who died in my arms at 17 years old.

If you don't, then maybe you shouldn't have pets.

On another note, what's with the comment you made here?

"I actually think there are a lot of people on this board that if it weren't for their sexual drives are pretty good people."

So are you saying that our sexual drives make us something other than good people?  Makes no sense to me.

i agree..makes no sense to me either..why start a thread about a dog with that sly insinuation..are we 'bad' people who happen to love dogs..

He has made some other rather stupid posts in the short time he has been here as well.

I truly believe that many of the rather conflicted individuals here should really reconsider whether or not they should be in a committed relationship at all. If you really want to be that selfish and self centered, why even bother being in a relationship. I am single and can be as selfish as I like, but when in a "real" relationship, i can't imagine being as selfish as many of the guys here seem to be.

if there is anything they can do. Many times vets volunteer to help dogs that have been abused or low income families who can't afford to save their animals. Of course if you are just worried about ass money, that's not a good excuse. If you truly can't afford the bill, they may work with you.

Buy pet insurance. I have an 85lb Golden Retriever who when i first got her i held in the palm of my hand. She has been with me through thick and thin for the last 11 years. She needed knee surgery on both knees. Watching her run afterwards was worth every penny i spent.

Why not spend a couple hundred to put the dog down then donate a few grand to charity.  Sometimes keeping a pet alive when they are suffering is more for our comfort then theirs.

Dear Ms. Rayne:
Although it was a long time ago, I am just wondering if you cat knew that you where going to become a provider with a name like Jezebel? Perhaps she had a conversation with you in another life and gave you a suggestion that you were not ready to go with yet?

I agree.. pets are like children. I have 2 dogs & unless after the surgery they would still be in living in pain, I would spend it. I had a 6 year old dog when I was 17 who overnite developed a rare condition that completely paralyzed her from mid-spine to her rear legs. At the time, the vet said they had experimental surgeries that started at around $4K, but there was no guarantee of it working and she may never get the use of her legs back. We decided to put her down, as she was miserable(she was a border collie/lab mix & activity and running are their livelihood).

Also, take into consideration if you have children..loosing a beloved family pet, is a heartbreaking experience(we lost our 13 and 14 year old dogs when I was in 4th and 5th grade).

No one can figure this out but you. Vet bills are extraordinarily expensive these days. At the same time, many people love and adore the animals in their lives as much as they do any other family member; myself included.

That said, in the context of this particular venue---where you are asking this question---a fuck board where men talk about, in fact brag about, how much money they spend on providers it is hard not to acknowledge that there are a significant number of men who go out of their way to hide large expenditures from their wives/SO’s.

They frequently defend this by asserting that seeing providers is of paramount importance to them. And that even though they are, technically, cheating on their wives---in the end, they feel they are better husbands for doing this.

But no matter how you slice it, that is money spent that most (if not all) of your SO’s do not know about.

How much do you spend on providers? How important is this dog to your wife? Would your wife agree that the money you spend on providers is as important, or more important than money spent on the dog?

So you would kill the dog and devastate your S.O. for 7 K ?
 7k divided by 350 = 20  .

If it's only the money that's stopping you, and you aren't jealous of the dog ,
get a second opinion and another estimate from a  country vet .

If you think you can replace her dog, I hope she realizes which one should be replaced .

Don't mind me , I like my Pets a lot more than a little money .

I have a dog who is the joy of my life if I had the money and knew that he needed a surgery that costs 7k I would spend it.But,that is just my thoughts. You mentioned that it would be cheaper to replace the dog with a new one but it is obvious your wife has an attachment to this dog.She will be devastated to put the dog to sleep to avoid paying the 7k.Another dog is not going to replace the bond she has with your current dog.
Why not try the medicine which is a cheaper method to hopefully cure your dog's problem?
If you do not have the money or do not want to spend that much that is a conversation you and your wife will have to discuss and see what works best for your household.
No one here can really tell you what is best to do unless they are in your same situation and even then what one might do another might not.
Good luck to you I hope your doggie gets better:)

I think there are some comments lost here...

It seems to me that you don't believe that the treatment will work...First, if you don't trust your vet, go get a second opinion. Then decided treatment or not. Beyond that, at 5 years old, unless its a Newfoundland, it has some time to give.

I understand the cost aspect to your argument, but you probably won't get that type of opinion over on people until the dog is around 9 or 10, 13-14 for a cat.

For now, I have to say spend the loot. 100 bucks worth of lube and a vivid imagination will get you through the next few months while you recover. Who knows, maybe your SO will be so grateful, she will give you some rock star style sex.

I assure you, you would be better off telling your SO you blow cash on this hobby, then you will telling her to kill the dog because you don't want to spend it.

If she loves the dog and you put it down things may get ugly on the home front! It may cost 7 grand to save the dog but may be cheaper than divorce.

Of course, if your marriage is on the rocks and you want to lose all the baggage, just shoot the damn thing....and keep your faithful companion (the dog!!).   LOL

Since when does my sexual drive have anything to do with me being "good people"???

You have a hell of a lot of nerve starting your question off that way. If your SO is going to be devastated, why are you even asking this question? Are you so fucking cheap that your SO being devastated isn't worth a lousy $7K, no wonder you have to come on a fuck board where guys conspire to cheat on their wives to ask this question.

You should fucking apologize, first for insulting everyone on this board, secondly for putting a price tag on your SO's happiness. Either you can afford it, or you can't. How the fuck are we supposed to know your financial situation?

Once upon a time, I might have told you to "go fuck yourself" I am much nicer now and will simply ask you why you choose to insult the people from whom you plan on asking advice from?

BTW if you are such a fucking angel, and so concerned about the mental well being of your SO, how did you come to find this site in the first place? Much less choose to ask such a question of people you have so little respect for?

I certainley was not trying to insult anyone on this site as I am one here as well. Just looking for some other thoughts other than the drunken ramblings of a georgia gambler. All others were well recieved and I appreciate your ideas.

I was hardly the only one to notice your thinly veiled insult to the board, nor was I the only one to take offense to it. I am just the only one who called you out on it point blank.

Let me repeat my question.  "Why do you feel the need to insult the people you are asking advice from?"

Would your wife sell her Vuittons to save the dog? If the answer is no you know what to do.

Problem is that this becomes an emotional decision because of timing. I've owned many dogs and there was one that we spent 5k trying to save and it was money wasted, all we did was prolong the dogs suffering. Now with each new dog we go in without the emotions and decide a limit in what we would spend to save him. We've been good about sticking with that for the last 2 dogs, and we loved those bastards dearly. Because we almost ruined ourselves financially once, we will never happen again (regardless of where our income is now compared to 20 years ago)

Our dog had to have surgery on both back legs. He is a chocolate lab and this is fairly common for them. The surgery was about 10k and then rehab (basically a treadmill submerged in water) was another 2k. We never even considered not having this done as he is just one of the family. We have rescued two other dogs (black lab and a hound) and would do the same for them if necessary.

And I didn't even have an SO. I sacrificed a lot of pussy to cover that, but I'm happy with the decision. The cat is 9 now and healthy.

im sure the cat woulda done the same for you

Bottom line, dogs are good; that's why their name is "Dog": God spelled backwards. They give us unconditional love that we either accept or take for granted. I won't get sudsy here but it wouldn't be hard to do. I buried my first dog, Pepper, the most beautiful English Springer Spaniel ever nine years ago and I still tear up thinking about it. Read "My Dog Skip" by Willie Morris and get the movie with Kevin Bacon in it. I haven't read the rest of the comments on this thread but you may want to consider contacting Good Dog Rescue. It's a great source - not that you have a "rescue" dog but ask for advice. They may be able to steer you to a vet that is not so pricey.
If you decide to put your dog down please do it with dignity. Don't take her to a sterile stainless steel table to get the shot and die. I arranged with my vet to come to my house to put Pepper down but I was the last person she saw before she died since I held her head looking at her - then I buried her. Sorry, I didn't mean to get emotional but dogs are good. gf60

And the cat still didn't make it.  For everyone the choice is different when it comes to just how far you'll go.

this planet I would pick the dog every single time. 80% of the people on this planet could care less if you live or die and that acts like you're the second coming everytime you walk through the door.

i have no idea where this rant came from..i have no idea what it means either..

He's almost 10yo with a 15 year life expectancy.  without the surgery, he would have been gone in 6 months, so for me that works out to $2500 a year to extend his life expectancy.  Additionally, he's pain free now and far more mobile and that alone was worth it.  As for replacement...You can get another four legged creature in your home, but it will never replace the original.

I'm guessing that most guys that post here spend at least 7k a year on the hobby, so if $ is an issue I would suggest that you give man's best friend an extension on life and take a hobby break.

I don't know the OP's financial situation. Only he knows if he can afford the 7k or not. However, since he is asking this here, I have to assume he spends lots of money on escorts. Personally, I would save the dog, but I'm an animal lover as well. Any pet I've had for an extended period of time, I consider to be a family member.

Yes, you can replace the dog and over time you will forget and you'll love the new one just as much, but would you want someone to attach so little meaning to your life as well? The same will be true of you one day.

As a person who has owned, trained, saved and cared for dogs throughout my life, this is one of the most important decisions you will ever have to make for another being. There is no intrinsic monetary value to your dog. The dog is part of your life and your family's life. I'm sure that when you raised the pup and threw sticks for it to retrieve you didn't calculate the monetary value on the plus and minus column. You don't do that with your family members.

That being said, the question is, can you actually afford this expense. It may mean that you are rearranging your budget to not include things like hobbying. And we will probably judge you harshly if you would rather put your dog down than give up the oldest business known to man. Of course man's closest and oldest companion has been his dog. I would also make sure the Vet knows what he/she is doing. And second opinions from more qualified experts may be in the offing. And it is possible that if you don't want to keep the dog, someone with a better grip on the situation may be able to take over. Some people cannot go through this kind of thing emotionally, and turn to individuals or groups to help them out with possible adoption. But if your dog is really suffering, you may have to reach the most difficult ultimate decision. The time frame and the money really have nothing to do with this. There are no guarantees in any of this. It's life. Your dog is sick. If it can live an honorable life after surgery, then it will be worth everything in spirit. If it won't live that kind of life, and will continue to struggle with it's health, then it may be best for the dog that it does not suffer. The dog can't tell you any of this, which makes it more difficult. It seeks to please you. Please try to do the same for the dog.

Remember that your Noble Beast thinks you are his god. And it thinks you will make the best decision under the most trying circumstances. I would try to live up to that standard

You are a gentleman, sir. You showed sensitivity to the writer and offered meanigful advice and counsel. Thank you for your comments. gf60

running a beef farm. My heelers are some of the best workers I have so 7k would be well spent and if it makes the old woman happy for even a day I would pay it twice .
