Found money - ethical question

Money just "floating in the wind" is quite a different story. I wouldn't give it a second thought before spending it "quite foolishly" lol

Enjoy your good fortune, unless of course you see a news story about how some little old lady just lost her life savings in that same neighborhood. In that case, I am sure you would do the right thing.

so I can call and thank you for picking up my money and make arrangements for you to give it back to me.

If there was a wallet with some ID that would be one thing, but there is no way you are going to find out where that money came from. Advertise the fact that you have it and douche bags will be will be crawling out of the woodwork to claim it. You might consider just giving it to a charitable cause...if you believe in Karma.

if there was absolutely no I.D. of any type sitting around with the money, like a torn bank deposit bag or something like that, then keep the money (assuming it's not counterfeit)

if you want to clear your conscience, head to the local authorities, tell them your story and turn it in.

if you don't want to involve the authorities, then keep the money and thank (insert deity here) for your good fortune.

you could always split the money up and use it in various ways.  split it up and save 1/3, donate 1/3 to charity or church, spend 1/3 on something fun, i.e. new flat screen, new rims & tires, see one of the fine ladies here, etc.

congratulations on your windfall!

It isn't yours to keep BUT;
do not put an ad in the paper. You sit on the money for a time frame of about two months all-the-while WATCHING your area for any indication that someone has lost an assortment of cash. Then commence investigating that claimant. Giving this scenario, you have just taken reasonable care(legal term)to establish ownership of said item. After your attempt to establish ownership, the money should be yours to dispense of as you please. My address is.....LOL

As amazing as it may seem, I found a lot of money while driving my truck to town yesterday.  For a little background, I live in a very rural area and drive about 20 miles to get to the nearest big town.  Early Saturday morning, I was driving to get my usual weekend breakfast treast and observed a lot of what seemed like pieces of paper in the middle of the road.  As I drove over them, the paper got suspended in the air and started flying all over the place.  Suddenly, it occurred d to me that it was not ordinary paper, but money.  Immediately, I slammed-on the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road.  No one was around, so I got out and started chasing the money down and picking it up.  As I was gathering-up the money I noticed that that the bills were twenties and fifties.  Holy shit!  I spent about two or three minutes gathering-up all the bills I could find and raced back to my truck before anyone came by to spot me.  I found no other objects, no wallet, no envelope, nothing.  Now for the strange part:  Almost immediately I thought to myself -  "FREE HOBBY MONEY!  Next, I stared to count and add-up the total.  Without getting into specifics, it was a considerable amount of money. I like to consider myself an honest and ethical guy, but I was torn by what to do next.  Should I make an attempt to find the owner of the money by placing an add in the paper?  Or, should I just chalk it up to extremely good luck and use it to "stimulate the economy" by using it to see some ladies?

You don't have to "sit on the money" just be prepared to do the right thing if the rightful owner suddenly appears.

I didn't like the fact that you were willing to simply spend it toot sweet. If you count it and are willing to pony up if the OWNER indeed comes forth, then so be it. Why spend it then if you can afford to give the proper amount BACK at a later date?

and what difference does it really make? spend it, sit on it, If a rightful owner comes forward, your conscience has to be your guide, and honestly, How much money can we possibly be talking about? It wasn't a suitcase full of cash, it was a bunch of loose bills floating in the breeze.

And as for what "you like" do you really think I give a fuck? lol

If you really want to try to find the rightful owner, place an ad that gives no amount, no location and no date.  All it should say is: "Lost cash lately?  I found some.  Prove to me it's yours and you can have it back."  But, you know what?  It's a bad idea.  Like LIP said, you'll still have to deal with a zillion greedy jerks calling, playing guessing games with you.  More important, they'll have your phone # and may be able to use Internet tracking to get your name and location.  It is not worth it.  If you want to feel good, donate some or all of it to charity.  Or just decide it's God's way of telling you he wants you to get laid.

Give it to Mikey cuz he REALLY needs to get nekkid with Edrienne Cole.

Seriously. It's a life or death situation. I'll die if I don't get to wear that gorgeous ass of her's as a hat.

Fuckin' look at her! For God sakes, man! Show some compassion. I'll name our firstborn after you. Though, I don't think the other kids will take kindly to a girl named 'Luckyassdude', but WTF? ;)

This seems the most reasonable thing to do. Putting it out there that you found some will bring people just trying to get it. By watching for any indication that someone lost it and going from there you have made the effort and you can use it freely if it is never claimed legitimately.

Hold it for a few months. See if you here anything about missing money then after a few months if no one claims it. Spend it as you see fit. Give it to the poor and needy, get laid buy the lady/ladies of your dreams, and/or give it to poor MP so he can get laid by the lady of his dreams. (He really needs to get laid.)

Now I do recall recently losing a large amount of cash about 20 miles out of town. Just kidding.

Guys and Gals thanks for the input.  I believe that I have a plan for the money.  First, I will wait (about a month) and see if anyone makes a plea for or reaches out to to the community for lost money. I would hate to see some poor old lady loose her life's fortune.  If no one surfaces, I plan to donate half of the money to a local monastery.  The brothers are real cool and have helped a of people in the community.  I plan on using the other half to buy a new truck and take my ATF on an extended trip to the islands.  Thanks for all your help.

Thank you so much for gathering up my money and posting to the group about the lucky find. I felt like such an idiot after I discovered it missing. I thought I would NEVER get it back. Please send it in a plain brown wrapper to:

Impposter
General Delivery
Grand Central Station Post Office
New York, NY 10017-9999

And, please, keep 10% -- no, 20% -- as a token of my undying gratitude. Thank you for being such an honest person.

BTW, don't most localities have official policies about turning in substantial found money or goods? If unclaimed or no inquiries after 30 or 60 days, the finder gets to keep it? Or is that just in the movies?

Up Mikey.  The lady has a level of class to maintain and you're a dose of anti-class that she can't afford to take.

Stop fawning over the woman. It has passed embarrassing and moved into the pathetic fast lane.  You're starting to remind me of one of those yipper/yapper dogs that bounces around your feet yipping all day long just waiting to get a shutup kick.

of anyone getting it back? I don't mean just the person who turns in that much money, but the person it's supposed to belong to? While I think that most ellie is / are honest folks, if it's a substantial amount, it seldom sees the light of day again once it's turned in.

Don't forget that if you do get to keep it after reporting the found money, you also get to report your god luck to the IRS, and State and county and city tax collectors.

With my luck, the large bills would probably be counterfeit and get me into major hoo-hah!  If you have a friend in retail or a bank, have them check each bill with their magic pens.  Better yet, borrow the pen so they don't see just how fortunate you have been.
