I have just discovered ( and yes maybe I am late figuring this out. ) but many here helped me figure out, that my wifi-hotspot would not work on some adult sites. Verizon has banned access. I am hoping that does not happen here.
I figured this out in a motel where I stopped with my private WIFI and got on the Motel internet and the adult sites came up no problem. ????
My regular phone is with Verizon and my burner is a Tracfone (now owned by Verizon). There is one particular adult site that can't be mentioned here that I used to be able to see while in cellular data mode, but now can only visit when I'm on a non-Verizon wi-fi connection. It's been at least a few months now.
I have Verizon Home Internet (5G.) It's fast, but peculiar. If I try to log into my Hotmail account, it is very slow. 10's of seconds. But if I turn on VPN and log in, it's fast as normal. That makes no sense, but it has been like that for months.
VPN can get you around a lot of blockage like that, and it also prevents snoopers from seeing which sites you visit. I use VPN on my smart phone when I'm using public wifi. Who knows who is monitoring traffic there.
You might have different firewall network settings (for example, private vs public) if you're using windows, or if you're on another phone, there might be some firewall filter on the Hotspot phone/access point itself. It's hard to say because you can have firewalls both on software of your browsing device and also on access point (Hotspot) device.
Just curious about your statement. You mean you usually setup a wifi hotspot using your phone then connect to the internet via your phone's connection sharing?
I'm not the op but yes, that's what many people do.
I've used it before in places where I could not use the public wifi (ie, hospital etc) because it wouldn't have open ports that I needed. Most public wifis have very limited ports that they have opened, assuming that most programs use 443/80 for https/http.
So you setup your phone as Hotspot, set up password so you can use it as a wireless access point and connect to it from another device. Most plans have X data cap for hotspot/tethering.
And obviously you still can tunnel traffic via your own VPN so all data is encrypted through it.
